From severe weather protocols to road safety tips, Waterford is ready for winter!

As winter approaches, Waterford is prepping for the chilly months ahead with the launch of an extended Severe Weather Protocol by the Waterford City and County Council. The Integrated Homeless Services will kick off their winter operation from November 1st, 2024, all the way until March 31st, 2025. This protocol comes as a critical lifeline ensuring that the most vulnerable residents receive the shelter and support they need during the harshest weather conditions. It’s a reassuring reminder to the community that no one faces winter alone.

In conjunction with this initiative, the council's Senior Roads Engineer has issued a cautious alert to motorists about travelling during hazardous weather conditions. Drivers are being urged to stick to national and secondary roads, particularly when the storms hit hard. Rain, snow, and ice can create treacherous situations, and while it may be tempting to take shortcuts, the risks aren’t worth it. A little common sense goes a long way—that and perhaps a warm cuppa before hitting the road!

As part of the efforts to mitigate the impact of severe weather on its citizens, the council is also encouraging the community to remain informed about local weather forecasts and to stay updated. The impending winter might bring cozy nights by the fire or bustling holiday gatherings, but it can also prompt a sprinkle of chaos when nature unleashes its fury. Staying aware and prepared ensures that Waterford will weather the storm together, just like a warm hug from an old friend.

So as you gear up for this winter, remember to keep an eye on road and weather updates while letting your local council's initiatives guide you through the chill. And while some may grumble about the cold and rain, it's just another chance to don your favorite woolly hat and brave the weather!

Interesting Fact #1: Did you know that Waterford is home to the oldest city in Ireland? With its rich history dating back over 1,100 years, it’s a place where even the weather feels historic!

Interesting Fact #2: During winter, Waterford can experience an average temperature of about 4°C (39°F). So while you're bundling up in layers, keep in mind that even chilly temperatures can't dull the spirit of this lovely Irish gem!
