Irish Households, Brace Yourselves: Spider Season Is Here!

Home tips for spiders - Household pest prevention - Interesting spider facts - Irish weather patterns - Met Eireann - Spider season in Ireland

Keep your windows shut or be prepared for an eight-legged invasion! Discover why it's time to batten down the hatches in Ireland.

As the days grow cooler and nights get equally chillier, Met Eireann has an important message for Irish households: keep your Windows firmly shut! Especially over the next few weeks as the dreaded spider season begins. With temperatures dropping, our creepy crawly friends aren’t ready to face the cold just yet and are more than happy to seek warmth indoors. So, if you've left your window ajar during our recent warm weeks, you might want to reconsider and shut those pesky invites to your eight-legged guests.

It's not just spiders that are trying to move in either; a range of other insects are also scouting for a cozy spot to spend the winter. With spiders looking for warmth in nooks, crannies, and possibly your favorite corner of the sofa, it’s clear that keeping those windows closed is crucial. The advice being dispensed is simple: keep your doors and windows closed at all times for at least the next six weeks. So, unless you fancy sharing your dinner with a fellow in the multi-legged community, it’s time to take serious action against this impending invasion!

While it might feel a bit extreme to be told to shut your windows completely, it’s genuinely well-intended advice. Think about it: how would you feel if you were suddenly kicked out into the cold? Spiders are often misunderstood and have quite the reputation as unwelcome guests, but they can be quite harmless and even beneficial to the garden by controlling pests. However, that doesn't mean we want them crashing our homes like a house party!

So, as we enter peak spider season, let’s join forces and fortify our homes against these tiny invaders. Remember, peeking out to see the last of summer heralding autumn is best done with closed windows. On a brighter note, did you know that the average house spider can spin a web that is around 3 feet wide? Additionally, they consume more than 2,000 insects in their lifetime — talk about an eco-friendly roommate! So while lockdown might feel a bit prison-like, you can rest easy knowing your new roommates are hard at work behind those closed windows!
