Did you hear? Irish fans took France by storm, filling restaurants and campgrounds and breaking spending records!

July 2023 was a landmark month for AIB customers, particularly those from County Cavan and County Monaghan. These enthusiastic supporters not only cheered for Team Ireland at the Olympics in Paris but also made headlines for their spending patterns. With most transactions recorded on debit and credit cards, it seems that the energy of the Olympic spirit translated into some seriously enthusiastic spending habits! The top two categories for these celebrations of life were restaurants and campgrounds, showing that the great outdoors paired with fine dining was the order of the day.

Overall, AIB reported a phenomenal annual surge in card spending, primarily driven by the influx of Irish fans descending upon the French capital. While many were in attendance to support our athletes, they didn't shy away from treating themselves to delicious meals and comfortable accommodations. This surge was supported by a 7% increase in spending at hotels when compared to the previous month. This rise counters the notable dips observed in other areas, particularly pubs and off-licence outlets.

Despite Irish fans lifting the spending figures in France, the local pub scene wasn't faring as well. Spending on pints and bottles took a hit, with a 10% decrease in pubs and off-licences, and restaurants also saw a 6% decline month on month. This pivot could suggest a shift in leisure activities, as many are prioritizing hotel stays and cinema outings over traditional pub visits. In July, overall spending jumped by 7% from June, showcasing that while the drinking establishments faced decline, the thirst for travel and experiences was ever-present.

Interestingly, this summer spending trend connects to more than just mere numbers; it's a reflection of the spirit of the Irish people. With our athletes bringing home medals and the society embracing the joys of travel and good food, it's clear that the love for gastronomy and adventure is alive and well! Did you know that many famous restaurants in Paris remain famously booked through Olympic season? And who could forget that Irish hospitality literally made its way across the channel? With hotels in Ireland also seeing an uplift in revenue by 7%, it appears both sides of the sea are reveling in Irish spirit!
