LIV Golf Talks a Big Game to the Global Elite. Now Come the Majors. (The New York Times)

Despite setbacks, LIV's executives insist the Saudi-backed league is soaring. For many fans, the rhetoric is less important than results at events like the ...

Before the audience of tastemakers and sought-after investors, though, Norman appeared to suggest that some in the Saudi orbit regard LIV much like a test drive. LIV’s star turn at the event in Florida could be seen as a vote of confidence in Norman, who has defied months of speculation that his ouster as LIV’s commissioner was imminent. But Norman’s presence on the stage in Miami Beach was somewhat remarkable, following months of a lower profile after he provoked broad condemnations for statements that downplayed Saudi Arabia’s record of human rights abuses. But if players such as Smith and Johnson are unable to recreate their past magic sooner than later, the league’s prospects could diminish into a circuit of also-rans. But Johnson, who [won the 2020 Masters](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/15/sports/golf/dustin-johnson-masters-win.html) with the lowest score in the event’s history, lurks. [who won the 2018 Masters](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/08/sports/golf/patrick-reed-masters-.html). Even PGA Tour stalwarts have begrudgingly acknowledged that a LIV victory in a major, especially an early one like the Masters, would unleash a shower of athletic attention on a league that has frequently drawn more headlines for its finances. But really at the end of the day, it’s all of us going in there and just trying to play the best golf we can and be ready for the four biggest weeks of the year.” For many casual fans, LIV’s legitimacy, if the league lasts, is most likely to be settled at places like Augusta National Golf Club, not at meetings of the global elite or in a thicket of antitrust case filings. “Would I like to have LIV be up at the top? But it could enchant fans and encourage at least some of them to keep tabs on a league that has, so far, largely been marked by bravado. Such a victory would certainly not extinguish the perception among critics that the league is tarnished by its association with Saudi Arabia.

like I do every major event I play in, you put your blinders on and once the gun goes off you go play golf and try to win a golf tournament.” “To be honest with you when I was there, and I had my Aces stuff on [Reed and Johnson’s LIV team is called the 4 Aces] and they treated me the exact same way. Simon Dyson, an Englishman who won six times on the European Tour and played in two Masters before going into coaching, said last week at Orlando’s Orange County National: “Would they want two or three tournaments leading up to the Masters in a row? “First and foremost, for me, I'm trying to go there and play the best golf I can,” Smith said last Thursday following his pro-am at LIV Golf’s Orlando tournament. But his glittering record at Augusta may be enough to extract the kind of golf that saw him finish third to Masters champion Scottie Scheffler last year, second to Johnson in 2020, and in the top 10 in two other Masters. “But the cool part of this is, the four times a year we are all going to be together, that puts a little more emphasis on the majors. I'm looking forward to getting back [to Augusta] and seeing familiar faces and competing against the best guys in the world. Whether they’ll be mentally prepared for the week at Augusta National, where the “temperature” towards LIV golfers will be turned up as they practice and play for the first time in the U.S. But the curiosity of whether LIV players will be in “game shape” is only part of the intriguing discussion underway. “Most of us [LIV golfers] will get four cracks at it this year [in majors], and hopefully we can get a win out of it,” Smith said. 1 at the time, in the final round at the Dubai Desert Classic in January and finished second. Top players who left for the rival league, such as Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, have played less tournament golf in the run up to the year’s first major than at this point a year ago on the PGA Tour, many of them getting in about half the competitive rounds.

"But really, at the majors, top players in the world are going and playing against each other. Spain's Jon Rahm, a three-time winner this year, has cooled of late, withdrawing from the Players due to illness and finishing outside the top 30 at the Arnold Palmer and WGC but on Sunday the world number three is expected to be in the hunt. The 47-year-old has looked more comfortable but his surgically reconstructed leg will be put to the test at Augusta National, a layout he knows better than anyone in the field but also one of the more taxing walks on the PGA Tour. As always, ultra-private Augusta National has had little to say about the bickering, and broadcasters have indicated they will ignore the elephant in the clubhouse, but golfers have conceded there will be no escaping the issue. The Masters: A LIV winner at Augusta National? Greg Norman ... (Sky Sports)

When Scottie Scheffler won The Masters last April, no LIV Golf event had taken place and there was little indication about who would join any proposed tour.

Live coverage of the opening round begins on Thursday from 2pm on Sky Sports Golf. I think if one of the LIV players does win, I think it'll be definitely a huge statement for LIV." If I'm the Masters right now, I would want, on Sunday, DJ or Brooks or Cam, any of the guys against Rory (McIlroy) and Jon Rahm. "Unfortunately, we didn't get the team win, which kind of is a little bittersweet. Greg Norman has said that there could be some wild scenes at Augusta this week if a LIV Golf player manages to win The Masters.

Could you imagine what a scene that would be, all these players hugging the winner.
