Garda representative chief welcomes 'clarity' from Eoin Ó Broin over ... (The Irish Times)

Controversy over the post, along with rosters and gender recognition directive, expected to dominate three-day Garda conference.

Minister for Justice Simon Harris is expected to address the matter in his speech to Agsi delegates on Monday evening. The directive concerns how people transitioning gender should be addressed by their preferred pronouns. “There are a large number of people in the Garda organisation who are not aware of the rights and entitlements of people who want to Transition and how on a practical day basis they can be supported in the workplace,” she said. The post drew widespread criticism from gardaí and politicians. However, in the absence of “an awareness and education programme”, it is unfair of management to issue the directive in its current form, and “even more unfair is the threat of discipline hanging over us if we are misguided due to a lack of education”. Agsi is also to seek the formal withdrawal of the Directive on Gender Identity in the Workplace due to a lack of “consultation and awareness” on the issue.

Eoin Ó Broin has insisted his tweet of an artwork depicting gardaí at a famine-era eviction was not meant to offend officers as he spoke by phone today to ...

“The guards that were in the photo were actually present, masked at an eviction, so it’s not an unfair representation. It’s not necessarily about the gardaí.” Obviously, it’s about eviction and the stark reality of eviction and especially an eviction with staged backing. What my image draws on is the eviction that took place in Frederick Street in North Dublin. Gardaí are in Galway today for their 45th annual delegate conference. "Now this spring he is dragging the gardaí into political debate. That’s not something that the piece is about. But all of those evictions eviscerated a huge amount of fury from people,” he told RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland programme. I think the membership will as well. “The tweet is intended as a criticism of government policy, not the gardaí.” "I think his phone call was sincere. “The intention was to highlight the issue of evictions and the real misery that families are going to face.”

“So I welcome the fact he has shown remorse but we have seen what he has done. The image shared was an awful attempt to try and compare gardai to some sort of colonial force past.
