It was a poignant win for the Yeats County as it came on the one-year anniversary of the death of former Sligo player Red Óg Murphy.

The late Red Og Murphy was poignantly remembered on the first anniversary of his death after Sligo defeated Wicklow in the Division 4 football league final ...

Captain Murphy went on to accept the trophy on behalf of his team and declared that Sligo's success was dedicated to their late team mate. We miss him dearly. 'Days like today were made for Red Óg.

Wicklow continued to set the pace. Sligo nearly made an ideal start with a goal shot from David Quinn but the ball flashed across the face of Wicklow’s goal with just 37 seconds on the clock. That was the first of six consecutive wins for an improving Sligo side following their opening round slump to Laois, with Wicklow showing their credentials by beating Laois – both Laois and Wicklow had made the drop from the Allianz Football League’s third tier last year.

Cian Lally blasted over in the 40th minute when a goal was there for the taking but Kilcoyne wasn't as wasteful three minutes later when he rattled the Wicklow net. Murphy didn't register Sligo's first point from open play until the 24th minute but back-to-back Wicklow scores from Quinn amounted to a strong response, leaving the Leinster outfit 0-7 to 0-2 clear.
