Shamrock Rovers secure first win in 7 against 10-man Dundalk (The42)

Robbie Benson's red card just past the half-hour mark inflicted the hosts with a considerable handicap.

Then, the game’s big talking point arrived on 31 minutes, when Benson was shown a straight red card by referee Arnold Hunter for a high challenge on Grace right in front of the dugouts — meaning Dundalk would have to play about an hour with just 10 players. The Lilywhites should have equalised just five minutes later, however, when a lovely exchange between Connor Malley and Benson saw the former slip John Martin through on goal, but the Dundalk forward blazed over the top when it looked easier to score. After what was a cagey opening to affairs, The Hoops took the lead after 22 minutes, when a Daniel Cleary ball into the penalty box was met at the far post by Gaffney, who managed to get himself in ahead of a static Archie Davies to head home and make it 1-0.

Rovers were determined to right the wrongs of their sluggish start to the season and were intent on inflicting pain. The champions were on a seek and destroy mission as they chased a belated first win of the season - and a first win here since 2020. Stephen Bradley may have been frustrated by Rovers start to the season, but he wasn’t unduly concerned as he felt it was only a matter of time before they hit their stride. But they were already 1-0 down and in a spin before that, and the numerical disadvantage only accelerated their unravelling.

Then, just after the half-hour mark Benson received his marching order for catching Grace as he tried to control the ball with a high foot.
