Man Utd are keeping their cards close to their chest over Mason Greenwood, but it feels as though temperature are being taken over a possible return.
It feels like United are a little too keen to be seen to be doing the right thing by the wrong person. If Greenwood was a young defender struggling to establish himself, would United go to similar lengths and compromise their perceived values as reports suggest they have repeatedly done with their wonder-kid? They have had almost 14 months to do their digging and though it was best left to the police for over a year, the club were hardly starting afresh upon news that the CPS were discontinuing their probe. For many of us not burdened with the obligation and scrutiny facing the United hierarchy, it is rather more black and white: Mason Greenwood should never again enjoy the privilege of pulling on a red shirt. But morally there is a clear right and wrong side to stand in the debate over Mason Greenwood. Mason Greenwood is a subject that splits Manchester United fans; we bring you the other side of the argument here. We also have mails on Arsenal, ...
Back in the late 2010’s it very much felt to me like Liverpool and Spurs were in a mini-league together; rich enough for regular European football, but not rich enough to win the league. We absolutely know we lucked out on our CL run (god knows what drawing Marine has to do with any other cup run, given we have nearly always lost in the SF or Final stages, when reached, by a fellow Big Six – Big Five – team). Tottenham are a big club by many measures, sadly most are historical which is a source of frustration given just how close we have come in recent years to adding to that history. So let me conclude and say that domestic abuse and assault of any kind by anyone of any gender against any other gender is unacceptable but we must not always leap to a conclusion of guilty based on hearsay, Instagram and the like or even the accusation alone. We’re a mess right now and my personal theory is that the fetishisation of finishing top 4 over trophies that comes from Levy has infected the club, but we still remain the 6th member of the Big 6. This all leads to Spurs not being a top 6 club, and why shouldn’t the sixth club be Leicester, or (hilariously) Everton, Villa or Forest. He then goes on to complain about us beating Marine on our way to a Mickey Mouse cup final, which is both factually wrong (oddly enough you don’t draw non league teams in the League cup) and ridiculous – as if no other team has ever reached a cup final after a generous draw. B) Trot out a bullshit tinfoil-hat Fox News theory that Rodri’s admittedly-shocking tackle on Odegaard, was down to Rodri’s “fear” of Arsenal in the title race (and not say, because Rodri has a history of making crap mistimed tackles like this when playing for Spain, who aren’t as good as Citeh, meaning Rodri has more spaces to cover and is often at sea). If you have something, shouldn’t you and the many be turning it over to the CPS so they can prosecute the case? The CPS didn’t even feel they have enough to attempt to make a decent go of it. In the last article, he suggested the priorities need to be what investors would think, or what the women’s team feel on the matter. Watson would like us to be judge, jury, and executioner, despite us not having anywhere close to all of the facts available to us.
A recent report in The Athletic has highlighted further evidence of Mason Greenwood's bad behaviour at Manchester United.
“But, then again, Greenwood levelled the same criticism at Cristiano Ronaldo when he was still at Real Madrid. “He’s dead,” Greenwood once said — implying he was finished in teenage vernacular. The police spoke to Man United about Greenwood’s behaviour, but the club were all too aware, as there had been instances of him leaving his house during lockdown, and sneaking out of his parents’ house when he was younger.
The Mason Greenwood Mailbox has predictably prompted a flurry of replies and most make the same point.
The important thing now is that we don’t let this go to waste, as we did in 2008 (although to be fair, we had France, Italy and Ukraine in our group then. We have to be very careful in this country that we dont go down the road of ensuring someone being accused of something gets the same punishment as someone found guilty of something. We’ve got better and better but until now, didn’t really have a marquee victory to go alongside the improved performances. It’s not really for him or me or any of us to pontificate on the rights or wrongs of the CPS’ decision. While Greenwood may be innocent in the eyes of the law, to some extent this is irrelevant; Manchester United are perfectly entitled to make a decision that it is not in their best interest to be associated with him any further, and people are perfectly entitled to have an opinion on whether or not they should. Think of the turmoil they would be going through and then think whether it is more important to you to see an above average player playing for your club again. It probably is something that United need to consider when they’re making a decision about reintegrating them into the squad. That said, I’m trying my best not to make my mind up based on the calibre of people who are defending him. A number of responses this morning seemed to be going down the line of argument that because no prosecution was brought forward, there is no chance Mason Greenwood committed any act worthy of club sanction and all should move on from the issue. But, having seen the tweet and link to this morning’s mailbox I think it’s important that there’s a general awareness of how the legal system works in this country. Our legal system is built on a foundational principle that it is better to let some of the guilty walk free rather than convict an individual innocent. It may well be Greenwood is more likely than not (over 50% probability – incidentally the burden of proof in a Civil case) to have commited the crimes he was accused of, but that’s not something that gets near to the threshold to move forward with a prosecution.
