Burns beats Cameron Young in match play final in Austin as Rory McIlroy beat world No 1 Scottie Scheffler 2&1 for third.

“And then I hit some good shots in the play-off, then I missed a shorty there on 13. Especially towards the end of the round I hit a lot of putts that I thought were going in that didn’t. However, an aggressive tee shot on the short 13th set McIlroy up for a birdie and he remained two up until Young birdied the par-five 16th. “It’s a bit frustrating, but I put up a good fight today. McIlroy fell behind against Young after making a bogey on the third, but bounced back to birdie the fifth, sixth and ninth for a two-hole lead at the turn. The one-sided contest was in stark contrast to the morning’s semi-finals, which both went to extra holes and produced shock results.

Young recovered from two down with three to play to beat McIlroy on the first extra hole.

Burns almost holed his tee shot on the 17th to edge in front but Scheffler birdied the 18th to keep the match alive and both players birdied the first extra hole. Further birdies on the ninth and 10th, as Burns bogeyed both holes, gave Scheffler a two-hole lead before Burns birdied the 13th and 15th to get back to all square. Young also birdied the 18th to force extra holes and the 25-year-old then birdied the first extra hole, the par-five 12th, despite having to pitch out of a fairway bunker with his second shot to leave him 170 yards from the hole.

Sam Burns cruises to WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play win - PGA ... (pgatour.com)

AUSTIN, Texas – Sam Burns came into the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play without much fanfare. That's kind of his thing.

Amazingly, this was Burns’ tournament debut, and while the Match Play has historically taken some time for players to figure out – Geoff Ogilvy in 2006 was last to win it in his first try – Burns took to it quickly. Burns fought back and took a 1-up lead to the 18th hole, but Scheffler birdied it to force a playoff. “I think after 10 holes this morning, my caddie, Travis, kind of gave me a good kick in the butt and said, ‘Come on man, let's go, you got this.’ And I really needed it at the time. But Burns found another gear, making eight birdies in a stretch of 10 holes to close out the victory. He was not featured in the Netflix docuseries “Full Swing” and won’t be in the second season, either. He cited a driver change – his old one was deemed non-conforming – and his work with coach Pullin for his turnaround.

The final edition of this wild and wacky tournament turned into a downer for just about everyone but Burns.

The highlight for Young was his semi-final win over McIlroy, who was in full flight for so much of the week. 10 in the world and collected $3.5 million from the $20 million purse. Instead, it got a championship match that felt like a mismatch the way Burns was playing. The end to the final was anticlimactic. And then Burns delivered a masterclass performance with eight birdies over his last 10 holes for a 6-and-5 victory over Cameron Young in the final edition of the Match Play. That was a nail-biter. This was a rout. Young had to settle for his sixth runner-up finish in the last two seasons on the PGA Tour, disappointed but not without perspective. But it was nice to come out here and get a win this afternoon.” He made a few mistakes in the championship match, but there was no stopping Burns and that silky putting stroke at Austin Country Club. Young hammered pitching wedge to 9 feet and made birdie. Burns was celebrating his fifth PGA Tour title as McIlroy and Scheffler played on.
