Monetary policy committee votes to increase base rate after February's surprise rise in inflation.
Economists have suggested weaker levels of wage growth could reduce the risk of persistently high inflation. The extension of the government’s energy price guarantee, at £2,500 for an average household bill, would help real incomes remain broadly flat, rather than falling significantly. The The Bank’s official target for inflation is 2%. In a fortnight of heightened unease in global financial markets, the Bank’s monetary policy committee (MPC) voted by a majority of seven to two to increase the base rate for the 11th time in a row. [Bank of England](https://www.theguardian.com/business/bankofenglandgovernor) has raised interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point to 4.25% in response to higher than expected UK inflation and signs that Britain’s economy was holding up better than feared.

The Office for Budget Responsibility, the government’s fiscal watchdog, expects inflation to fall rapidly, reaching around 3% in the final quarter of this year, helped by falling energy prices and further easing of supply bottlenecks. It added that the UK banking system “remains resilient.” The Bank of England’s job is made even more complicated by the fact that the UK economy is expected to shrink this year. “With a flagging economy and lower energy costs still set to drive a significant fall in inflation this year, despite February’s surprise increase, the case for cutting interest rates is only likely to grow,” commented Suren Thiru, economics director at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. The Bank of England said it would “continue to monitor closely” any effects from the banking crisis on credit conditions faced by households and firms. Policymakers approved a quarter-point increase, to 4.25 percent, while affirming that British banks were “resilient.”
“The persistence of inflation appears more worrying in the U.K. Those prices “tend to be volatile and could therefore prove less persistent,” according to the minutes of the bank’s meeting. To some extent, those risks materialized in the surprising upturn in Wednesday’s data, which showed food prices rising in February at their fastest pace in 45 years and a measure of services inflation increasing. Bailey said in a video posted by the bank on Thursday. The Bank of England forecast that the inflation rate would fall significantly this year, and average about 4 percent around the end of the year. But it noted that, in Britain, wholesale bank funding costs, a measure of how much it costs banks to borrow money, particularly for short periods, had risen, a sign of increased risk in the banking sector. He argued that the central bank would pause rate increases because wage growth was easing and energy prices were lower. At the moment, “it was unclear how credit conditions and economic activity might be affected by recent banking-sector stress in a number of advanced economies,” the Bank of England said. The central bank had forecast that the inflation rate would fall to 9.9 percent. And wage growth has been weaker than expected, easing policymakers’ concerns that high wages in the private sector would make it harder to return inflation to the bank’s 2 percent target. Harry Kane fires himself into the record books, scoring his 54th international goal to surpass Wayne Rooney as England's all-time leading goalscorer.
Three of these were in friendlies - one in a 3-2 win in Germany in March 2016 and a double in another 3-2 victory, this time against France, in June 2017. The next highest scorer in the current England setup below Kane is 27-year-old Raheem Sterling with 20. Kane shows no sign of slowing in his goalscoring either, having recently passed the 270 mark for Tottenham. Brentford's Ivan Toney and Callum Wilson of Newcastle are the latest. Alan Shearer - at Euro 96 - is the only other one to be top scorer at a major finals. The breakdown of the goals scored by England's leading goalscorers says a lot about their era. His fourth and fifth hat-tricks were scored just three days apart - the one in San Marino coming shortly after a treble against Albania at Wembley. No player has ever scored more for a single manager in England men's football history, with Lineker's 35 in 58 matches under Sir Bobby Robson the next best. Kane's goal haul includes an incredible record of scoring in qualifying matches for major tournaments. He became the first player to score four goals in an England game since Ian Wright against the same opponent almost exactly 28 years earlier. Agonisingly, he missed the chance to overtake him by missing a second penalty in that game, It was the same old penalty routine from Harry Kane, only this time it took him to a place no England player has gone before.

There was a flurry of bookings and tensions began to fray as the clock wound down, with Shaw sent off with 10 minutes remaining. Unfortunately, some visiting fans chanted the same at points during the first half. Kieran Trippier, Reece James and Conor Gallagher were introduced as England went to a back five and successfully strangled the life out of the match. The left-back was booked in the 78th minute for timewasting and handed another for a challenge on Retegui. That goal was no less than England deserved given a first-half display that should have brought a third in stoppage time, only for Grealish to inexplicably hit across the face of an open goal from a Kane cross. Saka sent over the resulting corner and Kane saw a shot at the far post blocked, only for Rice to swivel and lash home the loose ball in the 13th minute.

The Bank of England raised interest rates by a further quarter of a percentage point today and said it expects the surge in British inflation to cool faster ...
The Bank of England was the first major central bank to start raising rates in December 2021 and until this week had seemed likely to join the Bank of Canada which this month stopped raising borrowing costs. The Bank of England predicted measures included in Hunt's budget would speed up Britain's sluggish economy and increase the level of gross domestic product by about 0.3% over the coming years. The British central bank is worried about the strength of the labour market because pay growth, despite cooling a bit recently, is running far above its historical average and shortages of workers remain acute, all of which is inflationary. The bank today noted "large and volatile moves" in financial markets around the world caused by the banking turmoil but said its Financial Policy Committee judged that Britain's banking system remained resilient. Inflation in the second quarter would be lower than the Bank of England forecast last month after finance minister Jeremy Hunt last week announced an extension of state subsidies to lower households' utility bills, and international energy prices fell, it said. "The MPC will continue to monitor closely indications of persistent inflationary pressures, including the tightness of labour market conditions and the behaviour of wage growth and services inflation," the bank said.
Harry Kane scored a penalty to become England's all-time record goalscorer in their 2-1 defeat of Italy, with the defender Luke Shaw also shown a red card.
From back to front – and that included the goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford – the passing was on point. The turnaround was remarkable. Italy could not get near to them on the ball, the combinations up through the thirds easy on the eye. Italy are, of course, the reigning European champions, although it feels as if their second failure in a row to qualify for the World Cup is defining them more at present. A win is a win and this was a big one, England’s most difficult assignment of the group passed already. He was central to England’s barnstorming start as they controlled the tempo and the ball, looking extremely confident on it. It was Kane to Grealish and he did well to release Jude Bellingham, who advanced and unloaded a vicious drive that Gianluigi Donnarumma tipped over. What a moment it was for the captain. When they play at this stadium – especially this season, the Scudetto so close that everyone in town has started to prepare for the party of the millennium, connecting the buildings in those narrow streets with blue and white sheets – it can feel like an out-of-body experience. The rather key difference this time was that England had scored the first two goals. It ought to have been 3-0 in first-half stoppage time only for Jack Grealish to miscue wide of a gaping goal. It was a night when a Harry Kane penalty conversion positively overflowed with narrative drama.

Came on in a period of the game where Italy were on top. Really struggled to get into the game in the time that he was on the pitch. As the game became stretched, he showed some good touches in possession and his physicality helped Italy disrupt England's rhythm. Like many of his team-mates he endured a difficult first half but had some superb touches in the second. Plenty of bite in the tackle from the PSG midfielder, as you'd expect, but the 30-year-old struggled to have an impact in the first half as England dominated the midfield battle. Helped turn the game in Italy's favour. Improved as Italy grew into the game in the second half, but was booked for stopping a potential England counter before being replaced by Tonali. Italy's captain for the night in the absence of Leonardo Bonucci. Combined brilliantly with England's supporting forwards in the first half and continued to work tirelessly in the second. Italy's midfield had a torrid first half with the likes of Barella unable to get on the ball and dictate play. Came under pressure in the first half as England attacked with pace and energy. Largely assured in the first half, save for one early lapse.

Kane whipped in a cross midway through England's dominant first half that was begging to be tapped in at the back post but Grealish was 15 yards away. All his good work in Naples was undone by avoidable errors, which will see plenty calling for him to lose his place in the starting XI. On Thursday night he was the standout player on the pitch in the first half. But a chance was handed to him Naples, preferred to Phil Foden as Marcus Rashford was missing with injury. On the evidence that's gone before Maguire will start against Ukraine on Sunday, but the pressure will be firmly on again to perform. With Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips mopping up behind him, Bellingham is thriving in the more attacking role he was handed by the England manager during the World Cup. All the while, England were sinking further and further back, unable to muster so much as a shot in the second half. He had looked weighed down with the pressure before his miss against France but has responded superbly to that setback with a glut of goals for Tottenham. It's no wonder the biggest clubs in the world are scrambling to sign him for huge sums this summer. And yet, it is also possible to find familiar flaws in the performance. It must have been nerve-racking, given the enormity of the moment and what had happened in December. Rooney now hands the baton onto Kane - and the new record holder looks to run with it out of sight.
Harry Kane deserves to stand in the company of England greats and can push his scoring record far into the distance of others, writes Phil McNulty.
He can link play from all parts, has a prodigious work-rate and offered so much more than goals in his international career. As at club level, the trophy is missing. Such are the high standards he maintains, there is no reason why Kane cannot end his England career with a total that will take an awful lot of beating - and a record that will need a truly great striker to overtake it. What should be remembered after this night in Naples is England have been privileged to have such an outstanding striker at their disposal, someone who has every right to stand in the company of those he overtook in the 44th minute of their first win against Italy in Italy since 1961. And then there was the heartache of the World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia in Russia in 2018, the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy at Wembley and the personal heartache of that France game in Qatar. The heartfelt congratulations from Rooney and Lineker was an accurate reflection of the respect in which Kane is held throughout the game, both as a striker and inspirational leader of this England team - a personality so hugely admired by his colleagues.

Kane tugged on his England jersey and roared with delight in an emotional celebration after converting a spot kick during the 2-1 win over Italy.
“We feel like we are one of the best teams in Europe and we have to keep knocking on the door. It wasn’t nice to finish it that way but we spoke this week about getting back to it,” Kane said. “It’s a magical moment.” Congrats Harry.” “Great man, unbelievable goalscorer and an England legend. Rooney scored his 53 England goals from 2003-2018.
Harry Kane sits at the top of a golden seam of main men after goal in Naples – and his mark of 54 goals will be difficult to beat.
The finish was horrible, stunned weirdly back across a semi-open goal and well wide of the post. Kane buried it high to the goalkeeper’s left and just kept on running to the corner as one slice of the ground at the far end erupted. Just before half-time Kane almost made a third for England, sniping through on the left, looking up and pinging the perfect low cross to meet Jack Grealish’s run on the opposite flank. He plays as a No 10 for half the game, uses the ball beautifully is, in effect, a one-man attacking plan. His goals per game record is better than any significant goalscorer of the past 50 years, better than Rooney, Charlton, Lineker, Owen, Shearer. There has always been something retro in Kane’s noble sad-lion styling, the comic book brow, the 1950s insurance clerk hairstyle, as though this England line is turning back on itself in time, completing the cycle of England hotshots. Kane was a magnet for the ball in that period, making it stick like a human baseball mitt. Kane is, for some reason, talked down by some, dismissed as a penalty king, a deflections merchant, a man who has simply got lucky 54 times in 81 games. Several times he dribbled away from his man, then was caught – he really does chug these days – then had to dribble again, a strange game of tag. Giovanni Di Lorenzo handled the ball shielding it from Kane. And yet of course they do matter, not least in international football, with its sense of duty and history and ritual. You ride it like a wave.
