"Do I think he wanted her to sustain these very serious injuries," the judge said, "I do not, but he was involved in what happened that night and culpable by common design for what occurred." Sentencing him, the judge said Lyons co-operated, pleaded guilty, has no criminal record and is unlikely to involve himself in any "great criminal behaviour" in the future. He said the offence was "out of character" and he would ensure that his son "would never see the inside of these courts again". 'I've to be like this for the rest of my life and in four-and-a-half years he'll be out and about' - Alanna Quinn Idris, who was blinded in one eye during an attack in December 2021, speaks after one of her attackers was sentenced "I’ve to be like this now for the rest of my life and in four and-a-half years' time he’ll be out and about and I don’t really feel like these consequences are really justified, considering how I have to be now for the rest of my life." The gang were armed with a hurley, the saddle of an e-scooter and a knife and when Ms Quinn Idris tried to pull them off her friend, one of them hit her with the saddle.

Ms Quinn Idris was taken by ambulance to St James Hospital with a broken eye socket and then transferred to the Eye and Ear Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. A letter from a counsellor said Lyons has engaged in regular counselling with “significant success and honesty”. Lyons and three others waited on the far side of the road from Ms Quinn Idris and Mr O’Sullivan. He has since re-enrolled back into education and a letter from his former homeschool liaison officer described Lyons as an asset to the classroom and someone who was kind and compassionate to others. Dean Kelly SC, defending Lyons, said his client was not involved in the “abusive and loutish behaviour” towards both victims on the bus. A probation report placed Lyons as at moderate risk of reoffending within the next 12 months. Another of the group then took the saddle from his electric scooter and started attacking Mr O’Sullivan. A knife was later found at the scene but was not attributed to Lyons. Ms Quinn Idris has since had numerous reconstructive surgeries to her right eye socket and a bone graft taken from her hip. Sometimes I wish I never woke up from when I was hit with that object,” Ms Quinn Idris told the court. Lyons also admitted assaulting causing harm to Ms Quinn Idris' friend Louis O’Sullivan during the same attack. Judge Nolan set a headline sentence of eight to nine years but reduced this on account of mitigating factors including Lyons’ early plea, his cooperation, his lack of previous convictions and his young age.

Alanna's Dismay At Sentence As Teen Is Jailed For Role In Brutal ... (Extra.ie)

Alanna Quinn Idris has criticised the sentencing of Darragh Lyons, saying outside court that the 'life she lost is only worth four-and-a-half years'.

He also said that the offence was 'out of character' and that he would ensure his son 'would never see the inside of these courts again'. Ms Quinn Idris said in court she was still discovering all the ways 'this awful attack' has hurt her and set her life in a different course. Garda Ciaran Murray told the court that it was an 'organised, retaliatory attack' by a gang of four youths who set upon a male and female whom they had tracked from a distance. Lyons did not wield any weapon in the attack, but he punched Ms Quinn Idris on the side of her face and was also involved in beating Mr O'Sullivan. In her victim impact statement, delivered at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on Wednesday, Ms Quinn Idris said her life as she knew it 'came to an abrupt end' on the night of the attack. In his judgment on Thursday, Judge Martin Nolan condemned what he said was a pre-meditated, savage attack that involved collaboration between the young men who perpetrated it.
