MPs back Rishi Sunak's new Brexit Northern Ireland deal (BBC News)

But former PMs Boris Johnson and Liz Truss joined 20 other Tory MPs and the DUP to vote against the agreement.

was unable properly to diverge and take advantage of Brexit," he added. But in a statement issued before the vote, Mr Johnson said it was "unacceptable". Despite originally billing the agreement as a "great deal for our country," Mr Johnson went on to join Tory Brexiters in bemoaning the economic impact of the checks it introduced. The original Brexit withdrawal deal negotiated by Mr Johnson introduced a series of checks on goods sent from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, in order to avoid a border with the Irish Republic. The vote is on a key part of the deal, known as the Stormont brake, that would give a future Northern Ireland Assembly a way to challenge new EU goods legislation. [writing in the Telegraph before the vote](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2023/03/22/go-back-eu-get-us-better-deal-prime-minister/) that Mr Sunak should "negotiate a better deal".

Ireland needs to increase co-operation with EU defence structures ... (The Irish Times)

Kenneth McDonagh of DCU says Ireland should consider if it is to continue relying on the 'kindness of strangers' for its security and global ambitions. Conor ...

Therefore, Ireland’s involvement in EU defence co-operation will likely continue to be compatible with the policy of neutrality, he said. Prof Andrew Cottey from University College Cork (UCC) said Ireland has arguably been excessively cautious in engaging with EU defence co-operation and that it could do more in this area. Until last year it was a member of just one.

What's the story with rainfall in Ireland so far this year? (RTE.ie)

We may have had a relatively dry winter, but are we making up for it now and will we see wetter months ahead?

The LTA or 'normal range’ for rainfall helps to put rainfall events into context, which is important because rainfall is a key indicator of changes in climate. This highlights the importance of having high quality observations to assess the effects of climate change on the water cycle." The reason for this change was a combination of milder air moving in from the West, while a high pressure system grew to the South. The infographic below provides meteorological definitions surrounding drought conditions and will provide a bit of context for the commentary below. The SSW in February 2018 led to the 'Beast from the East' and Storm Emma, while the SSW in January 2019 had no significant impact here in Ireland. Before that, the two of the driest winters on record occurred in 1963 (58% of its LTA) and 1964 (51% of its LTA). But impacts from the SSW were felt during the first week of March, when a cold Arctic air mass swept down over the country, which led to significant snowfall in places between March 8th and 10th, three weeks after the start of the SSW. February 2023 was the fifth warmest on record (record length 123 years) and, in terms of rainfall, was fourth driest (record length 83 years). Generally speaking, high pressure in winter is associated with settled, fair and dry weather, which was the case for most of February. [measure](http://www.met.ie/climate/what-we-measure/rainfall) how much wetter or drier a [season](http://www.met.ie/meteorological-spring-begins-wednesday-1st-march-2023) has been, it is always in comparison with a [standard reference period](http://community.wmo.int/en/wmo-climatological-normals), which in this case is the Long-Term Average (LTA) period from 1981-2010. In fact, no matter where you are in Ireland, this winter's rainfall was below normal, ranging from 131.4 mm (71% of its LTA) at Dublin Airport to 429.4 mm (91% of the LTA) at Newport, Co. Connacht Capitol - Frank McNally on Ireland's little-known ... (The Irish Times)

It had hitherto escaped me that in north Co Galway, there is a hamlet, or at least a townland, called “Washington”. The place seems to be better known by ...

“Because of the Parnell split, in which [Mullarkey] sided with Parnell,” Kilgarriff continues, “the PP in Dunmore [...] relived his two sons of their Mass serving duties and Andrew’s vehement Anglophobia at that time resulted in his renaming Garrafrauns Co Galway to Washington in honour of George Washington . A report in the Connacht Telegraph some years later confirmed that the postal authorities had bowed to local wishes. Like the building itself, it was the work of one “Andrew Mullarkey, the well-known nationalist from Irishtown, Co Mayo”. I thought this ambiguous because of the implication that his supposed bankruptcy had something to do with the renaming. Despite the efforts of a “bucket brigade”, formed by neighbours returning from Sunday Mass, the premises was gutted. But in support of its Washingtonian aspirations, it also has a White House, albeit only a pub of that title.

Life expectancy in Ireland making strongest gains in western Europe ... (The Irish Times)

Incoming HSE chief Bernard Gloster emphasises 'significant improvement' in mortality rates from heart attacks, strokes and cancers.

He said improvements were being made, but acknowledged that retention was a problem and people found the work very challenging. He would “never shy from asking for more capacity”, but the first thing he was doing was to fill the beds that have already been approved. Responding to questions from Róisín Shortall TD about new regional health areas, he said “the centre is just too top heavy”. Mr Gloster said the gains in life expectancy had been driven by a sharp reduction in mortality from big diseases. He said the leading causes of death in Ireland include circulatory system diseases such as stroke and heart attack due to ischemic heart disease; as well as cancer and respiratory system disease. He said life expectancy in Ireland was now in advance of the EU average.

But committed Tory Eurosceptics took aim at the government, with senior MP Bill Cash telling the House of Commons: "We have left the EU… And they are refusing to reconvene the Northern Ireland Assembly. need to move on and focus on more important things." Conservative votes alone would have been enough to win the day for his government, even without the support of opposition parties. A visibly angry Vicky Ford, Tory MP and minister under Johnson, said in the Commons that "the people of Northern Ireland and indeed the people of the U.K. However, Commons records show 48 other Tories either abstained or were excused from the vote.

What's the 'Windsor Framework' for Northern Ireland? (The Washington Post)

After the UK left the European Union in 2020, the status of Northern Ireland became a bone of contention. Britain's government complained that the ...

The new framework includes a new mechanism called the “Stormont Brake” (named after the region’s devolved governing assembly) for Northern Ireland to challenge amendments to existing EU law, while keeping the ECJ as the sole arbiter of EU regulations. The hope is that the DUP will then re-form Northern Ireland’s power-sharing administration in time for the 25th anniversary of the region’s 1998 peace treaty in April. An important hurdle was cleared in January, when the EU agreed to use the UK’s live database tracking goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland. Both sides have wanted to avoid that outcome due to the region’s long history of sectarian violence. It’s a solution to allow Northern Ireland to remain within the EU’s single market and customs union while rolling back many of the cumbersome checks imposed on goods arriving from mainland Britain under the original Brexit deal. After the UK left the European Union in 2020, the status of Northern Ireland became a bone of contention.

Northern Ireland voters back Windsor framework – poll (The Guardian)

Just 16.9% of unionist and nationalist voters oppose post-Brexit deal, survey finds.

The findings revealed a tacit rebuke to non-unionist parties that had demanded the protocol be implemented in full. Almost half of DUP voters, and 44.9% of all unionists, said the revised deal meant Sir Jeffrey Donaldson’s party should revive the Stormont assembly and executive. “The stance they took was popular among DUP voters and evidently they see it as having achieved [success] in spirit, if not detail.” The party has come under pressure from London, Dublin and Washington to revive devolved government in advance of next month’s 25th anniversary of the Good Friday agreement. The figure for nationalists was 54.9% agreeing, 6.2% disagreeing and 30% neither agreeing or disagreeing. The government is expected to win the vote with Labour support.

Sunak sees off Tory rebels over new Brexit deal for Northern Ireland (BreakingNews.ie)

Just 22 Tory rebels – including Boris Johnson and Liz Truss – voted against the measure in the Commons.

I hope he chooses to be remembered as a statesman,” he said. Mr Donaldson said the “bottom line” for the party’s return was an assurance that EU law could not impede Northern Ireland’s ability to trade with the rest of the UK. Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris said: “By voting in favour of the Stormont brake, we have voted to ensure that the people of Northern Ireland, through a restored executive, will have full democratic input to the laws that apply to them.” “So he has a choice: he can be remembered for the great acts of statecraft that he achieved or he can risk looking like a pound shop Nigel Farage. “The Windsor Framework is a turning point for the people of Northern Ireland, fixing the problems with the old protocol to ensure the smooth flow of internal UK trade, safeguard Northern Ireland’s place in the Union and address the democratic deficit,” the spokesman said. A Government spokesman hailed the vote, saying it put power back in the hands of Stormont and Westminster, ending the “ratchet effect” of new EU law in Northern Ireland.

Republic of Ireland v Latvia - 5 reasons to be cheerful (Irish Examiner)

Ireland warmed-up for Monday's Euro 2024 qualification opener against France with a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the Latvians on Wednesday.

Ogbene and Johnston gave a glimpse of what they offer Stephen Kenny if called upon in the immediate future. Despite a lack of game-time, Doherty used the ball intelligently. An Irish starting XI with an average age of 23 included individuals auditioning to face the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Antoine Griezmann.

Callum O'Dowda had already put a Republic XI with an average age of just 23.6 ahead before the teenager found the back of the net, but they were pegged back by vicious long-range strikes from Roberts Uldrikis and Arturs Zjuzins and it took substitute Chiedozie Ogbene's 64th-minute goal to win it. It is the misfortune of every promising Ireland striker to be compared to the prodigious talent of the 17-year-old Robbie Keane, who went on to score 68 goals for his country in 146 appearances. Evan Ferguson becomes youngest Ireland goal-scorer since Robbie ... (Independent.ie)

Ireland recorded a 3-2 friendly win over Latvia at the Aviva Stadium on a night where Evan Ferguson netted his first goal in international football.

Johnston offered another threat on 84 minutes, a move from the left, a swift charge into the box and a run past three defenders which led to a corner, no goal but impressive stuff from the Celtic man who is on loan in Portugal. Ferguson had played a role in the first goal and he claimed the second, again with some clever build-up play from Molumby and Smallbone, a cross from Matt Doherty which the Latvian ’keeper saved. And another new cap in the form of Mikey Johnston also made a mark, with an assist – of sorts – for the 63rd minute winner from Chiedozie Ogbene.

Latvia dragged themselves back into the game before substitute Chiedozie Ogbene won it.

Both men played a role in the sixth-minute opener, Ferguson feeding the ball out to skipper Matt Doherty on the right to pull it back for Smallbone, who crossed instantly to the far post for O’Dowda to send a diving header past helpless keeper Pavels Steinbors. It is the misfortune of every promising Ireland striker to be compared to the prodigious talent of the 17-year-old Robbie Keane, who went on to score 68 goals for his country in 146 appearances. Ireland lacks key mental health services, report finds (RTE.ie)

examines and compares mental health services in Ireland, France and Poland. It notes that Ireland's state services are "hospital-centric and there is a lack of primary mental health services". It suggests the promotion of public campaigns on mental health well-being and be clear that incidence and outcomes of mental health conditions cannot be improved without addressing the social determinants and inequalities of mental health. The report states that there is a lack of access to certain key services in Ireland "such as help for those experiencing a mental health crisis or emergency". However, the report notes that the dominance of hospital provision and the lack of community care leads patients with low level mental health conditions being admitted to acute psychiatric care unnecessarily. While it welcomed the recent development of online mental health and therapy delivery, it cautioned that it is "not a panacea for mental health services".
