People with Down’s syndrome have varied abilities, but, like everyone, they also have their own personalities, things they like and dislike, things that make them who they are! On 21 March, people with Down’s syndrome will ask the public and organisations around the world to stand With Us Not For Us. “People who have Down’s syndrome should be more confident and more visible,” he explains. Speaking about the importance of the day, the two brothers said: “We believe that Down’s syndrome and other disabilities should be celebrated. Like many people, Ross struggled to find work and so his big brother, Christian, wanted to create a company where he could be an integral part of the business. The group is made up of people with Down’s syndrome who work as part of the organisation, meeting each week to discuss important topics and to co-produce projects together. I have a green band so that people know I have a learning disability when we go to the airport – it means we can skip the queue. We have the right to say no,” explains Aimee. The theme recognises the need for a human rights-based approach to disability, with the view that disabled people have to be treated fairly and given the same opportunities as anyone else. On 21 March, people around the world will come together to mark an important event, bringing awareness and change to the lives of approximately 47,000 people in the UK. “It’s good when other people bring their projects to get involved in and learn how to talk to you. Aimee has two volunteering jobs with organisations focussed on saving the planet, and Angus works with a developer’s society and is an actor.

Those with Down’s Syndrome are also often not allowed to make decision about their own lives. Those marking WDSD will often wear odd socks as part of the campaign to raise awareness in the hope that by wearing colourful odd socks they can start a conversation with friends, family and passersby. The global Down’s Syndrome community created the day to highlight that people with Down’s Syndrome are often denied a good-quality education and the chance to work and earn their own money. The organisers encourage those wearing odd socks to tell curious people “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome.” From there, participants can tell them some important or interesting facts about the genetic disorder. WDSD is officially observed on the 21st day of the third month – a date that was selected to signify the unique trisomy of the 21st chromosome which causes Down’s Syndrome. WDSD promotes the narrative that people with disabilities have the right to be treated fairly and receive the same opportunities as everyone else.

The right to life is uncompromisable and is an exercise of our free will in defense of the most vulnerable. Without being able to express it at the time, I somehow knew Gabriel’s Down syndrome was only a small part of him, it was not his identity. However, my mom’s response shows that a special-needs diagnosis does not need to be a moment of grief, but rather a celebration of life. The fullness of Gabriel’s life is measured not by his external abilities, but by his eternal value as a child of God. Not knowing what Down syndrome was at the time, I can now undoubtedly say that my knowledge of it would not have mattered. I believe that we are at a moment of grace in this country where we can call more profound attention to human life with special needs, and I think the personal stories and the faces attached to the diagnosis are how hearts will be changed.
