Killian Phillips thought he'd 'never play for Ireland' as he eyes first ... (The Irish Sun)

ON ONE side of the Snugborough Road in Dublin 15 stands the Corduff Sports Centre.A hefty goal kick away on the other lies the National Sports Campus.

And Phillips reckoned going to England with some first-team experience helped make up for some of what he missed out on by not being in a full-time academy all the way up. Now I’m back playing in front of thousands every week and I love it.” Since then, he travelled to Singapore and Australia in pre-season, playing against Liverpool and Manchester United, before making his competitive debut for the Eagles in a Carabao Cup tie against Oxford United. Everyone else was in the League of Ireland. He explained: “I went from playing League of Ireland where you have the flares and all the buzz, and then there’s no fans and it’s a little tough to get up for the games. Phillips told those looking to follow in his footsteps how he worked to improve his technique simply by hitting a ball against the wall of The Foxhound Inn in Kilbarrack — which featured in the film adaptation of The Van.

The green Italia ‘90 kit for me is the bar.” “Up to that the Irish kit had been very heavy, woollen, almost rugby material. But if we lost all three games and stank the house out, the kit mightn’t have been as fondly remembered.” Then you had a team go to our first tournament and beat England wearing it. EOM: “It was the first time Ireland had ever worn an orange kit. It had the chevron effect running through it.” They managed to get the fledgling FAI into the Olympics. EOM: “The Irish players actually came together. “It could have been Liverpool, Celtic, Barcelona, but I just think the first offering should have been a very unique, bespoke kit for us. And then blue was the first colour we’d ever worn in 1924 at the Paris Olympic Games. “The next step is to get results. Not that he’s fully onboard with the new jersey.
