Scotland v Italy live: Score and latest updates from the Six Nations (Telegraph.co.uk)

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend: "Italy have taken on the same teams that we have played and two of those are the best in the world right now.

Scotland take on Italy at Murrayfield this afternoon in the final round of this year’s Guinness Six Nations. They have beaten the other four nations combined six times in total since 2000. Former Ireland Under-20 international and Munster fly-half Ben Healy could make his Scotland debut from the bench. They have done so just once in the previous 17 campaigns. Italy make four changes of their own, with 21-year-old Zebre winger Simone Gesi making his debut in place of Edoardo Padovani. Italy have possession near the Scotland 22 but the hosts win a penalty at the breakdown and rather than kick the ball out for half time they go for a line-out. "The Ireland game was very close, I think it was 25-21, within four points for a long period. There's been so much good feeling around the stadium and the team. "It's all in the performance today. For all their solid work in defence, Italy are really struggling at the scrum. At this stage last year, they went to Cardiff, played a great game and won that game. "There's been some good things and some not so good things, but you have to give massive credit to the Italians.

For only the second time in a Six Nations match since 2012, Gregor Townsend’s side were without Stuart Hogg and Finn Russell. The pair’s absence seemed to galvanise the team at first, with Duhan Van der Merwe producing an exquisite acrobatic finish to get the hosts up and running after Allan’s early penalty, before Kinghorn – who was given the reins at fly-half – dotted down either side of the break. Tommaso Allan’s try and a Paolo Garbisi penalty reduced the hosts’ lead to just five points to set up a pulsating finish with 20 minutes left, but Scotland managed to complete a defensive shut-out to seal their third win of the campaign.

"It was one hell of a game - they gave it everything, we gave it everything. The line-out started to malfunction (again) and Italy started to sense weakness. Hopefully we're third behind the two top teams in the world." Scotland lived in Italy's 22 for the rest of the half but toiled to take advantage. That last score by the Scots. Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend on BBC One: "You've got to trust that the players will front up defensively, which is what they did. That last stand by the Italians. And he showed it again early in the new half. Van der Merwe calmed local nerves soon after with a sensational finish in the corner. A few minutes remained and a try would done for the hosts. The finish was something special. This was messy from the start.

Six Nations: Italians were close to sneaking victory and were on opposition try line before Scotland broke to seal win.

Just as Scotland looked in full control, however, Italy got themselves back in the match when Allan bounded over for a well-executed try on the left. The hosts continued on the front foot early in the second half and Kinghorn got himself a second try just four minutes after the restart following another assist by White. Six minutes later, they suffered a further blow when prop Danilo Fischetti was shown a yellow card for repeated scrum infringements by the Italian frontrow.

Six Nations: Five takeaways from Scotland v Italy as Duhan van der ... (planetrugby.com)

Following a 26-14 victory for Scotland over Italy in their Six Nations fixture, here's our five takeaways from the match at Murrayfield on Saturday.

All the building blocks seem in place for a decent Rugby World Cup showing, with consistency in performance in those tougher games clear to see. Yes, it was nip and tuck whether they would come out on top on Saturday, but in the grand scheme of things, when looking at the table, the Scots can be delighted with their performance this Championship. Scotland made their intentions clear early in the game as they turned down kickable points and instead went for tries. It almost came back to bite them, and they were lucky to win, let alone in a maximum. Replays confirmed it was a fantastic finish, and he went on to cause Italy more problems as the match wore on. Defensively they were solid throughout at Murrayfield as Scotland were made to work incredibly hard for this victory.

Scotland v Italy report: late Blair Kinghorn try secures bonus-point ... (The Offside Line)

Blair Kinghorn claims hat-trick for Scotland in bonus-point win over Italy which should secure a third place finish in Six Nations.

Allan slotted the kick to make it a five point game with 15 minutes to go – which was just a bit too close for comfort. However, Blair Kinghorn pulled his conversion to the left of the posts, and Jack Dempsey then gave away a holding-on penalty at the restart allowing Allan to restore Italy’s lead. Winger Simone Gesi had to give ways so that replacement tight-head Pietro Ceccarelli could fill the front-row, creating a backline mismatch which Scotland took immediate advantage of, with Kinghorn ghosting through midfield to score in the very next play. With the second, against Pierre Schoeman for going off his feet, they went for a line-out which established field position from which Allan nudged the visitors into the lead following a George Turner offside penalty. With the first, awarded against Duhan van der Merwe for holding on, Italy went for the posts, but Tommaso Allan pulled his effort to the left. They have winning momentum but won ‘t feel this performance was much of a step in the right direction.

Highlights: Scotland v Italy (Six Nations Rugby)

Blair Kinghorn's hat-trick helped Scotland close out their 2023 Guinness Six Nations in style with a nerve-jangling 26-14 win over Italy at BT Murrayfield.

A try from Tommaso Allan and a penalty from Paolo Garbisi had Italy just five points behind with ten minutes to go and they very nearly crossed for what could have been the game-clinching score. But they could not quite get over the line and Scotland wrestled back possession before launching a stunning counter which finished with Kinghorn touching down under the posts. Scotland were coasting for much of the afternoon after tries from Kinghorn and a superb score from Duhan van der Merwe but they were under the pump for the final quarter as Italy threatened to steal the win.
