Champions Shamrock Rovers' wait for their first win of the season continues as St Pat's left it late to earn a 2-2 draw thanks to a Jake Mulraney strike two ...

Having had a couple of half chances just before the goal, the Saints responded brilliantly and really should have got level minutes later. As the game ticked over into injury time, Byrne smashed the post with the last kick of the game, and the drama continued onto the sideline: Tim Clancy saw red for throwing a water bottle in the direction of an official. Trevor Clarke did well to cut in from the left wing and with his weaker right foot, saw his guided effort come back off the foot of the post.

Jack Byrne's spectacular goal had looked like earning the champions a first win of the season.

That was only the start of the drama. The conservative approach backfired when Mulraney curled a beauty past Mannus with two mintues left on the clock. Most of last season was sullied by muscle issues but the Irish international did what few players earning a living on this island can. Seán Hoare was fingered as the guilty party but contact with Doyle was minimal. The problem with Rovers at the moment is difficult to define. Tip-off was retaken after the finicky official spotted a Rovers toe crossing the halfway line.

The marauding Neil Farrugia was also unlucky not to get a goal; his excellent performance deserved, having two glorious chances in quick succession. Having had a couple of decent half chances just before the goal, St Pat's responded brilliantly and really should have got level minutes later.

But it was substitute Mulraney levelled the derby with a fine effort from 25 yards. Sometimes it takes a moment of magic to go ahead in a derby, and that’s just what Byrne produced on 54 minutes. The Hoops were made to pay for their succession of missed chances as the visitors levelled five minutes before the break. Despite dropping two points late on for the third time in six games, Hoops boss Stephen Bradley was pleased with his side’s display. Towell broke the deadlock five minutes later, though. "When you lose three times in seven days at a club like St Pat’s, you will be under scrutiny.
