Gonzaga College are the 2023 Bank of Ireland Leinster Schools Senior Cup champions, defeating Blackrock College in a thrilling Final.

Wilson was held up over the whitewash. Eoghan Walsh stole the ball on the floor. It wasn’t a day to play the percentages. Even so, they were taking the fight to the champions. They needed a reaction. A thing of beauty.

Two tries from tighthead prop Mullan in a 10-minute spell, underlined by some excellent team handling, tip on passes and power in the collisions, took Blackrock into the lead. At 21-10 Gonzaga were in the box seat at the interval. When Wilson was held up over the line with five minutes remaining Gonzaga supporters might have feared the worst. Luke McLaughlin and Jamie Kennedy stood out even among the collective excellence of the Gonzaga eight. Captain and number eight Paul Wilson, who won an All-Ireland minor football title with Meath, had a colossal game, surrounded by team-mates who were equally uncompromising, focused and diligent. Fullback Charlie Molony excelled on restarts and had some good moments in broken play.

Then RBAI enjoyed a brilliant start to the second half as lock Jacob Edwards and winger Alex Place both grabbed tries, the first of those was converted. McMahon brought his individual haul up to 20 points with a fifth conversion and after they withstood a resulting surge from ‘Rock, Gonzaga had officially reached the promised land. Gonzaga reinforced their authority just four minutes later when superb approach work from McMahon and Hugo McLaughlin created the platform for Breslin to touch down in the right corner. One of five Gonzaga players to start last year’s final, McMahon comfortably added the bonuses to restore parity in a frantic encounter. Instead of a potential shot at goal, Gonzaga fly-half Stephen McMahon opted to kick a sixth-minute penalty to touch. They had looked set to fall short in agonising fashion when ‘Rock turned the tables on them inside the final quarter, but Wyley’s 68th-minute try ensured the Ranelagh side were added to the competition’s roll of honours.
