A power outage in Galway city today has left thousands without electricity. The ESB said that they expect the problem to be fixed before.

ESB predict the power will return at 5pm this evening issuing a statement to those affected: "We apologise for the loss of supply. ESB confirmed the power in Galway city has been restored. ESB explained the power in east Galway will be restored by 7pm, and not by 5pm as previously announced. The power has been restored ESB confirmed the return of power to some affected customers but over 7,800 remain without power. The fault was reported at a 110kV substation in the city at 9.40am with 7,819 customers reported as without power.

Traffic lights outside of the entrance to University Hospital Galway are also out of order. Most of the homes and businesses affected are in the suburbs of Ballybane, Ballybrit, Mervue and other areas on the east side of Galway city. The Galway Chamber has urged the ESB to urgently restore power to thousands of homes and businesses who have been without power in and around the city since this morning.

Fault fixed in Galway after widespread traffic delays (RTE.ie)

ESB Networks crews have completed repair work on a transformer in the city after it tripped this morning, causing widespread disruption.

Thousands of homes and businesses on the east side of the city were without power, and the issue arose after a transformer tripped at a sub-station in the Ballybane area earlier today. There were tailbacks on most approaches to the city and the Citylink bus company said its 1.30pm service to Cork was delayed by 30 minutes as a result of the heavy traffic this afternoon, which had an impact on pick ups in Limerick. ESB Networks crews have completed repair work on a transformer in the city after it tripped this morning, causing widespread disruption.
