Happy Saint Patrick's Day and be safe! The Irish celebrate Saint Patrick's Day by going to church in the morning and partying in the afternoon. Happy St. Patrick's Day: Bound for Ireland, gift of gab and all (Seacoastonline.com)

In his latest weekly column, Shawn Sullivan discusses his upcoming trip to Ireland - and the one reason he's going in the first place.

Mom kissed it while carrying me and, well, it has always been the joke in the family that it’s no wonder I have the gift of gab – the very thing the stone is said to bestow upon those who kiss it. So, I was a speck in mom’s belly when she and dad went to the Emerald Isle. Sometimes I think this is the only reason why I’m going to Ireland. At some point between the wedding and the honeymoon, mom and dad got the news that I would be arriving in the world in the spring of 1972. Mom and dad named him Shannon, after the river in Ireland. I want to see the River Shannon. I tend to be spontaneous when traveling, so I’m unlikely to map out a detailed itinerary for our travels, like Clark W. I grew up in a household that was predominantly Franco-American, but my father emphasized the Irish part with, well, the same pride and boisterousness with which I used to declare everyone Irish for a day every March 17. My parents got married in June of 1971 and took their honeymoon in August because dad needed the summer to finish his classes for his master’s degree. This trip has been at the very top of my bucket list practically all my life, once it was bumped up from the number-two spot after I finally made it to Disney World as a kid. In my life I’ve had opportunities to visit such countries as India, Ecuador, Mexico, Jamaica, and, of course, Canada. My wife, Valerie, our daughter, Madeline, and I will spend a week in Ireland.

Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the 5th century.

For St. Patrick's Day, let's pay tribute to one of Canada's founding ... (The Globe and Mail)

Many Irish settlers came to Canada as refugees fleeing an oppressed, impoverished land. They helped shape the society we live in today.

“Without those generations, neither the Canada of today nor the Irish community of Canada would have been possible.” One of the biographies is devoted to Ellen Dease, who came to Toronto in 1847 to teach but found herself ministering to refugees from the Irish famine who were suffering from tuberculosis and other diseases. Many of Canada’s prime ministers, from John Thompson to Brian Mulroney to Justin Trudeau, had or have Irish blood in their veins. They spoke English, like the British Protestant settlers of Upper Canada, but many were Catholic, like the French in Quebec. The Irish were among the first Europeans to set foot on what would become Canadian land. The Irish both dispossessed and were themselves dispossessed.

Green Grasshoppers-Happy St. Patrick's Day! (pentictonherald.ca)

Let's shine a light on grasshoppers, a group of insects that belong to the suborder Caelifera. These fascinating insects sport hues of green throughout the year ...

The life stage of grasshoppers goes from egg to nymph, to adulthood. A group of grasshoppers is called either a swarm or a cloud. The male will mount the female and deposit a package of sperm called a spermatophore. According to scientists who study Acridology (study of grasshoppers) there are over 11,000 species of grasshoppers across the globe. Fun fact: grasshoppers and locusts are the same creature, but the latter’s name has a bad rep due to the plaguing stories of them in biblical times. Let’s shine a light on grasshoppers, a group of insects that belong to the suborder Caelifera.
