Daniel Braganca is also out of contention but their first-choice goalkeeper Antonio Adan is expected to shake off a muscle problem that had kept him out of the win over Boavista. However, just as one long-term injury comes back, the Gunners now fear that Eddie Nketiah’s ankle problem could keep him out of action until after the international break, while Mohamed Elneny remains out of contention for the long-term following his knee surgery. "We have alternatives that can play in different positions and we have different roles to fill in relation to the chemistry of the players and what we ask them to do. It was a match where they rested several players with an eye to the trip to London, one which Sebastian Coates and Hidemasa Morita will not make due to the yellow cards they picked up in the first leg. 9 is best held in reserve, challenged to fight for his place against Leandro Trossard, who assisted all three Arsenal goals in their win at Craven Cottage. Arsenal: The three points garnered at Fulham on Sunday might have been the most significant boost to Arsenal's season but not far behind was the return of Gabriel Jesus, who could ramp up his return after playing 13 minutes off the bench in a match-long since won. The Gunners have won all their three European games at home this season without so much as a goal conceded but Ruben Amorim's side might be the toughest opponent they have faced so far, winners of five of their last six games. Last week, they drew 2-2 in Lisbon, frittering away an early lead with sloppy defending even if their attack still looked to be in fine fettle.

[Sporting](https://www.theguardian.com/football/sporting-lisbon) have it back. [Arsenal](https://www.theguardian.com/football/arsenal) giving the ball away. Arsenal give the ball back twice in two minutes. Edwards is on side and is one on one with the Arsenal keeper. The set piece is fizzed in to the near post and it’s headed out for another. Still, they find a chance to shoot but it’s never troubling the Arsenal goal as Goncalves is leaning back throughout the strike. 77 min: Edwards has a cross blocked on the right but gets another chance to whip it in. As the captain is leaning back he can’t control his header and it’s out for a goal kick. St Juste finds Trincao and then carries on his run and almost gets the ball back in the Arsenal box. The Belgian drives to the byline and is tackled but The Arsenal keeper made up for it a while later as he got his face in the way of a firm shot from Edwards and Arsenal held on as their guests exerted themselves. [Sporting](https://www.theguardian.com/football/sporting-lisbon) roared back in the second period and bagged the equaliser with a simply stunning strike 46 metres out as Goncalves beat Ramsdale from over the horizon.

Arsenal 1 - 1 Sporting CP - Match Report (Arsenal.com)

We bow out of the Europa League after losing the first-ever penalty shoot out at Emirates Stadium.

Trossard had a great chance to score the vital goal seven minutes into extra-time. The former Tottenham looked favourite to score, but our keeper raced out bravely to deny him, taking the shot square in his face. The visitors were on top now. Jorginho was dispossessed on the halfway line and Pedro Goncalves moved onto the ball. He took a touch, spotted Aaron Ramsdale well off his line and sent his shot looping over the keeper, and just under the bar. Gabriel Martinelli streaked away down the right wing after being found by a raking Jorginho pass, and headed into the box.

Arsenal 1-1 Sporting CP (3-3 agg, 3-5 pens): A wonder goal sent the tie to extra time before Mikel Arteta's team lost on penalties.

Consistently a threat whether receiving the ball in front of or in behind the defence. Passing as accurate as always but just lacking the ability to help dominate a game. The Portuguese remains a promising player but was subdued tonight, failing to create any notable chances despite often getting into good positions. The visitors made a bright start to the game in attack but failed to create anything of note as Arsenal eased themselves into the game. As the game went into extra time, Arsenal began to dominate with most of their first-choice players on the pitch. He forced a good save from Antonio Adan but the rebound fell straight to Granit Xhaka, who gracefully swept the ball into the far corner.

Arsenal player ratings vs Sporting as Xhaka good and Jesus ... (Football.London)

How the Gunners got on individually in their Europa League last 16 second leg clash with Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium.

Martin Odegaard: Raised the volume of the home supporters after coming on and tried to give his team the boost needed late on to win the game. Leandro Trossard: Not as influential as he was against Fulham at the weekend as Arsenal struggled to gain control of possession. A few stray moments on the ball as well though. Not his best most influential display with a couple of poor giveaways in the second half. Gabriel Martinelli: In the wars on a few occasions after some meaty Sporting challenges. Gabriel Jesus: A really promising return to the starting XI for the Brazilian who played with his usual intensity and looked desperate to score. So much more influential in the attacking third than he has been and rewarded with a goal for his adventurous positioning. Granit Xhaka: It felt as if the Swiss was getting back to his attacking best against Fulham and that only continued here. Caught out a little in the build-up to the Sporting goal by diving in as the last man in midfield. Gabriel: Defended well for the most part as we've come to expect from the Brazilian. The Frenchman has been imperious so far this season and losing him for a while would be a massive blow to the title hopes. A superb save to keep out Edwards and keep the scores at 1-1 redeemed himself if that was necessary.
