OpenAI Announces GPT-4 (UC Today)

ChatGPT caused quite a stir when it entered public consciousness, and the conversational AI quickly became a part of our communications technology.

[Bing uses GPT-4](https://blogs.bing.com/search/march_2023/Confirmed-the-new-Bing-runs-on-OpenAI%E2%80%99s-GPT-4). They’ve created a Virtual Volunteer, where GPT-4 receives images and provides instant identification and assistance based on what it sees. When shown an image, it can identify objects, diagrams, and written text, and reply to prompts accordingly. This latest version was trained on an entirely new deep learning stack and built together with the team at Azure. Like older versions, it’s trained on publicly available and licensed data, developed using deep learning, and fine-tuned using reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF). With that said, GPT-4 is still limited in its capabilities. Like previous versions of ChatGPT, the AI can make mistakes or invent facts when it doesn’t have accurate data available. One major focus for GPT-4 was improving its safety features. [ChatGPT can transform unified communications](https://www.uctoday.com/unified-communications/what-is-chatgpt/) and the [customer experience](https://www.cxtoday.com/data-analytics/how-is-chatgpt-changing-cx/), so there will undoubtedly be new developments in the weeks and months to come. OpenAI tested GPT-4 against GPT-3.5 using several benchmarks, including AP free response questions and practice exams, as well as traditional tests for machine learning models. This furthers Microsoft’s investment in and partnership with OpenAI (at the same time as the company [laid off its ethical AI team](https://techcrunch-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/techcrunch.com/2023/03/13/microsoft-lays-off-an-ethical-ai-team-as-it-doubles-down-on-openai/amp/)). The release of GPT-4, OpenAI's latest language model, has the potential to transform the financial industry, creating FinTech opportunities.

As businesses increasingly rely on GPT-4 for decision-making, they must remain vigilant against potential biases in the model’s training data, which may inadvertently perpetuate discrimination. Data analysis and interpretation are crucial in FinTech, but deriving actionable insights from vast quantities of information can be challenging. By analysing customers’ financial histories and current situations, the model can generate informed recommendations, helping customers make better decisions and fostering long-term trust. [OpenAI’s GPT-4](https://openai.com/research/gpt-4), a cutting-edge language model, promises to revolutionise the industry like never before. GPT-4’s sophisticated NLP capabilities make it an ideal tool for automating tedious and time-consuming tasks, allowing businesses to reallocate resources to more strategic areas. expert reaction to OpenAI announcing GPT-4 | Science Media Centre (Science Media Centre)

OpenAI has revealed ChatGPT successor, GPT-4. Prof Anthony Cohn, Professor of Automated Reasoning, University of Leeds, said:.

“In the past decade we have created a form of AI by exploiting statistical correlations discovered in vast masses of data, a method akin to a shortcut, that avoided the need for explicit modelling. “GP4 includes several new features including the ability to generate human-like written responses to queries that come in the form of images, not just text, and is already integrated into Microsoft’s web browser. We should insist on continued testing against existing, validated information sources to ensure that the accuracy our collective knowledge base is not eroded.” “I’m intrigued to see the claims made about the reasoning capabilities of GPT-4. “GPT-4 is the latest of the large language models (LLM) to be announced over the last few years. The impressive language capabilities of ChatGPT opened our eyes to a whole swathe of new possibilities – multi-modal generative AI is going to multiply these. The release of GPT-3 in 2020 sent ripples of excitement through the AI community – it became clear that a very big bet by OpenAI on a new generative AI technology was beginning to pay off – this technology represented a clear step change over its predecessors. It is a vastly larger model and is claimed to outperform previous models, though aggregate performance statistics do not reveal the kinds of problems which it fails on, and whether it sometimes gets wrong answers to problems GPT-3 got right. “A range of issues have already been identified with previous artificial intelligence chatbots, including outputting incorrect statements (known as “hallucination”), limited reasoning capabilities and the generation of upsetting or offensive content. Likewise, GPT4 is not perfect but paves the way for AI being used as a commodity tool on a daily basis.” “The authors claim that GPT-4 substantially improves over previous models in the ability to follow user intent. Of note is their example showing the visual capabilities of GPT-4, where the input is a picture consisting of three panels, where one is a phone charging using what looks like a VGA adaptor, the second a Lightning phone charger in the shape of a VGA connector and the third a closer look on the VGA-looking lightning phone adaptor.

Do also realize that there are a lot of other movies available, well, other generative AI apps available, so you might want to make sure that your filmgoing (aka generative AI) experience is varied and fulfilling. They insist that though many of the AI makers seem to be sharing what they are doing, this is somewhat of a sneaky form of plausible deniability. To close off this portion of the discussion for now, generative AI by all AI makers is confronting these issues. You can also anticipate that if AI firms don’t try to deal with these problems, the odds are that lawmakers and regulators are going to be drawn into these matters and a tsunami of new AI laws will pepper all the AI makers and those that field AI. Also, the claim is made that GPT-4 outdoes GPT-3.5 in terms of averting AI hallucinations, even though it makes clear that they still are going to occur. Those of you that are interested in AI Ethics should consider doing a close reading of the TR and the SC. Fortunately, they have chosen the sensible approach of trying to get out there ahead of the backlashes and browbeating that usually goes with generative AI releases. The reason that this is questioned is that perhaps we are going to have generative AI that is tightly controlled by only a handful of tech firms. When you use a generative AI app, you at times just leap into a conversation that you start and continue along with the AI. Based on this series of approvals and disapprovals, the generative AI is roughly able to pattern match what seems okay to emit and what seems to not be allowable. A related aspect is whether the generative AI is in real-time scanning the Internet and adjusting on-the-fly the computational pattern-matching. Once a generative AI app has been initially data trained, such as by scanning text across the Internet, human reviewers are utilized to help guide or showcase to the AI what is worthwhile of saying and what is scandalous to say.

And crucially, they’re the good kinds of A.I. GPT-4 swiftly provided a list of advice for buying a gun without alerting the authorities, including links to specific dark web marketplaces. On the positive side of the ledger, GPT-4 is a powerful engine for creativity, and there is no telling the new kinds of scientific, cultural and educational production it may enable. The worst A.I. 'Basically mindblowing' — What GPT-4 can do, according to one ... (Sifted)

Icelandic startup Miðeind ehf was part of one of six beta-testing projects for OpenAI's new generative AI model as it worked to preserve the country's ...

“When I asked the model to explain what it meant it said: To be ‘kattafræðilega duglegur’ means that the cat is particularly diligent at what it does as a cat. The fact that OpenAI chose Miðeind as an early partner for GPT-4 does as least show the company has a global vision for generative AI — even if it’s a commercially motivated one. This means that even the people who built GPT-4 don’t know exactly how it answers questions in the way it does, meaning it’s been hard to get these models to show their workings. “GPT-3.5 could do it, but GPT-4 is better — it feels like the explanations are more plausible or more thought-through. This team of 12 people working on Icelandic language preservation came to be one of the anointed early testers of Silicon Valley’s hottest product after a May 2022 trip to the Bay Area. That means only a lucky few have had the chance to take OpenAI’s latest large language model (LLM) for a spin yet.

What can ChatGPT maker's new AI model GPT-4 do? (Terrace Standard)

The company behind the ChatGPT chatbot has rolled out its latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-4, in the next step for a technology that's caught the ...

OpenAI acknowledged that GPT-4 still has limitations and warned users to be careful. ChatGPT can write silly poems and songs or quickly explain just about anything found on the internet. The catch was that every word had to start with the letter G. “Humans are not fooled by the AI in `Black Mirror’ but they tolerate it,” Lapata said. “With GPT-4, we are one step closer to life imitating art,” said Mirella Lapata, professor of natural language processing at the University of Edinburgh. In one example posted on OpenAI’s website, GPT-4 is asked, “What is unusual about this image?” It’s answer: “The unusual thing about this image is that a man is ironing clothes on an ironing board attached to the roof of a moving taxi.”

The tool is so powerful that it can take a photo of a hand-drawn mockup for a simple website and turn it into an actual website using HTML and Javascript code. In just seconds, the chatbot gave him a perfect answer on how he should have treated the patient using all the correct medical terminology. Others expressed concern that GPT-4 still pulls information from a database that lacks real-time or up-to-date information, as it was trained on data up to August 2022. Anil Gehi, an associate professor of medicine and a cardiologist at UNC-Chapel Hill, described to the chatbot the medical history of a few patients he had seen earlier that presented complex medical cases. The new model can even analyze and describe photos, capable of explaining why an illustration of a squirrel taking a photo of a nut was funny (answer: “we don’t expect them to use a camera or act like a human”). “This latest one is sophisticated enough to draft a lawsuit. OpenAI hasn’t yet made the image description feature available to the public, but users are already gearing up for its public launch. But the previous version of Chat GPT relied on an older generation of technology that wasn’t able to reason and learn new things. The public got a sneak preview of the tool when Microsoft last month released the But developers are already finding incredible ways to use the updated tool, which now has the ability to analyze images and write code in all major programming languages. OpenAI unveiled the new GPT-4 on Tuesday, saying it can handle “much more nuanced instructions” than the older generation, which captivated users starting in November 2022 with its uncanny ability to generate elegant writing and answer almost any question.

The Big Tech Show: GPT-4 and the new era of AI (Independent.ie)

It's been a busy few months for artificial intelligence and the research lab OpenAI, who this week released the latest version of its chatbot ChatGPT.

“We all know news publishers in particular have seen the business model erode the resources that they have over the last 20 years. It's also going to it's still susceptible from what we've seen so far to misinformation and factual inaccuracies.” The thing that strikes me most about it, though, is that it is going to compound the existing deficiencies with the technology.

Evolution not revolution: why GPT-4 is notable, but not groundbreaking (The Conversation AU)

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence (AI) research company behind ChatGPT and the DALL-E 2 art generator, has unveiled the highly anticipated GPT-4 model.

[revealed](https://blogs.bing.com/search/march_2023/Confirmed-the-new-Bing-runs-on-OpenAI%E2%80%99s-GPT-4) its highly controversial Bing chatbot was running on GPT-4 all along. That being whether alternative approaches are required to fundamentally solve issues of truthfulness and reliability, or [whether](https://lastweekin.ai/p/the-ai-scaling-hypothesis) throwing more data and resources at language models will eventually do the job. [Kosmos-1](https://dailynous.com/2023/03/02/multimodal-llms-are-here/), a language model that accepts visual inputs the same way GPT-4 does. [technical report](https://cdn.openai.com/papers/gpt-4.pdf) controversially provides no details about how the model was developed, all signs indicate it’s essentially a scaled-up version of GPT-3.5 with safety improvements. Google also recently expanded its [PaLM](https://ai.googleblog.com/2022/04/pathways-language-model-palm-scaling-to.htm) language model to be able to take in image data and sensor data collected from robots. GPT-4 is much better at declining inappropriate requests and avoiding harmful content when compared to the initial ChatGPT release. [results](https://openai.com/research/gpt-4) highlighted by OpenAI, what immediately stands out is GPT-4’s performance on a range of standardised tests. One could argue GPT-4 represents only an incremental improvement over its predecessors in many practical scenarios. GPT-4 is a large language model (LLM), a neural network trained on massive amounts of data to understand and generate text. The GPT-4 model introduces a range of enhancements over its predecessors. This allows for richer storytelling, more in-depth analysis, summaries of long pieces of text and deeper conversational interactions. Such skills are beyond the scope of previous models.
