He is only worth anything to United while he is on the pitch, and after this suspension he will have missed eight league games due to cards he has picked up. On top of that, he missed the crucial game against Arsenal in the league due to the number of yellow cards he picked up, and he is one yellow card away from a Europa League suspension. Manchester United have confirmed the games that Casemiro will miss, following the club’s decision not to appeal the red card he picked up on Sunday.

Absence of midfield bulwark Casemiro may be costly (Irish Examiner)

Manchester United will have to cope without key midfielder Casemiro for their next four domestic games after the Brazilian's second red card in three league ...

He will miss games against Fulham in the FA Cup and Newcastle, Brentford and Everton in the league. They also take fractionally more shots per game but score fewer goals - 21 in his 15 starts, an average of 1.4, but 20 in 11 or 1.8 per game when he does not start. Casemiro has previously featured in wins over the Toffees - 2-1 in the league and 3-1 in the FA Cup - and Fulham and a draw with Newcastle, while the early-season 4-0 hammering by the Bees came before he had signed. In all they have allowed 15 goals with him on the field and 20 without. They have conceded barely a goal a game in the Premier League with him in the starting line-up, 16 in 15 games for an average of 1.07. Casemiro himself has two league goals and three assists to his name, also scoring twice in the FA Cup win over Reading and once in the League Cup final.

Ten Hag has Grade A plan to cover for Casemiro ban with shock ... (Teamtalk.com)

Erik ten Hag will have little trouble covering for the absence of Casemiro with the Man Utd boss tipped to consider a crafty new role for a star player.

That is just the way he is. “It is not ideal but they will just have to get used to it. However, Carabao Cup success aside, the last few matches Casemiro has appeared in have not gone to plan. Indeed, the 31-year-old will surely be among the contenders to win the 2023 Footballer of the Year. As a result, he will now sit out matches against Fukham, Newcastle, Brentford and Everton. Brazilian star Casemiro has been a superb addition for United since a £70m summer move from Real Madrid.

Now Casemiro’s latest suspension will take in a trip to Newcastle, with a top-four finish on the line, and an FA Cup quarter-final, with a treble at stake. In his performances and his influence, he has invited more comparisons with another United icon. Which may be the case up to a point: most defensive midfielders engage in tactical fouling and Casemiro has mastered the dark arts better than many. He had only seen red twice in the first 600 games of his career for club and country. “Casemiro is across European leagues in over 500 games he had never a [straight] red card and now he has twice,” Ten Hag said. Go back a few weeks and Manchester United could marvel at the range of Casemiro’s skills.

Man Utd can use Casemiro suspension to make summer transfer ... (Manchester Evening News)

Casemiro will the next four domestic games for Man Utd and his absence has tended to be a problem this season.

But these four games will help to tell Ten Hag if he has suitable backups in his squad or if the transfer market will be required to help solve this problem. It was noticeable in the recent games against Leeds and West Ham that the speed of United's attacking play was slower without Casemiro. It could also mean that position is bumped up the list of priorities. United were poor at Leeds when they started without him and had to bring him on after 45 minutes against West Ham in the FA Cup. This is a team that finds it hard to operate at the same level when The Brazilian is not only a world-class defensive midfielder, but a sensational passer who has been vital to United's ability to progress the ball. You could even add in the 7-0 defeat to Liverpool, when the Brazilian midfielder may well have been absent, given how badly he played compared to the rest of this season. How teams go about filling the gaps left by their very best players is an age-old question. When he doesn't start, they win 67% of the time but lose one in four. When he isn't involved [United](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-united-fc) find it harder to win games and easier to lose games. [Manchester United](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/all-about/manchester-united-fc) they win 72% of the time and lose just one in 10 games.

How Will Manchester United Cope Without Casemiro? (Forbes)

The Brazilian midfielder will miss United's next four domestic games after being sent off for the second time this season.

The Austrian is more comfortable on the ball than McTominay, and during games has significantly more touches of it. However, he has missed the last two games through injury and it is uncertain when he will be fit to return. United’s win rate with the Brazilian is 76%, but in the seven games he has been missing that dramatically falls to just 43%. His manager Erik ten Hag admitted he had made it impossible to simply cast him aside for his new £70 million signing. But McTominay is not a natural central defensive midfielder, and though he can use his strength and athleticism to form a barrier in the middle of the pitch, he lacks the calmness and passing ability to truly excel in the role. The Brazilian looked distraught, covering his face with his hands and resting his head on his team-mate Antony’s shoulder before slowly walking back to the tunnel.

Casemiro gives McTominay a month to prove himself an able deputy ... (Football365.com)

Whether or not Scott McTominay is content with being Casemiro's stand-in, the Brazilian has set up a huge month for his Manchester United team-mate...

Fred has established himself on the periphery of United’s side, in a more advanced role than one of the pivot positions. Ten Hag, who doesn’t mess about when it comes to making changes, presumably had to curb his urges during a first half in which the Hammers ran all over McTominay, before Casemiro’s night off was abruptly ended at the break. Eriksen’s injury towards the end of January, a consequence of Andy Carroll’s recklessness or the Reading striker’s desire for the following weekend off, was a major blow but one United can stomach. Which makes the absence of both all the more galling for United as they deal with the busiest schedule in Europe while still fighting on all possible fronts. Ten Hag himself aside, the Brazilian and his partnership with Christian Eriksen has been the single biggest factor in the Red Devils’ revival this season. Mercifully for the Manchester United midfielder, Erik ten Hag doesn’t seem to have made his judgement just yet which, thanks to Casemiro’s latest indiscretion, gives the midfielder a month to state his case.

Will Casemiro start on Thursday? (Manchester United)

Erik ten Hag has a particular decision to make in midfield when selecting his Manchester United team to face Real Betis on Thursday.

If United are cruising, take him off early and then maybe use that midfield pairing you’re thinking of using maybe later on in the game. “You can see easily why you’d make an argument to say Fred and McTominay, or whoever your midfield choice is going to be in the four matches Casemiro is missing should start this game, but literally every single thing I’ve seen from Erik ten Hag so far as Manchester United manager means he’s going to start Casemiro in this match. [triumphed 4-1 in the first leg](/en/ManchesterUnited/Manutd/Editorial/Content/Article/2023/March/09/Match-report-and-video-highlights-hub-for-Man-Utd-vs-Real-Betis-09-March-2023), but with a healthy advantage in the tie, there is also a case for making some changes ahead of another important cup fixture at the weekend. I know he was on a booking as well which didn’t help but I think to get 90 minutes under his belt at this stage with some big important games coming up would be key.” It’s a chance for Scott to get more game time because he’s not played that many games this season, get another 90 minutes in him. Ten Hag has also been known to use defenders in those spots in the past.
