Banshees Of Inisherin Donkey 'Done With Fame' Says Trainer (EVOKE)

Rita Moloney, who co-trained Jenny the donkey in The Banshees of Inisherin, has been training animals for screen for 40 years.

The next time I saw it I made a point of going to the cinema and I saw a completely different film. She also has a deep understanding of what will work in a scene involving a furry friend, as one story involving the movie Far and Away starring then-husband and wife Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman perfectly illustrates. Mary, a hugely experienced animal trainer with decades of experience readying all sorts of creatures for TV and film roles, spent hours patiently socialising Jenny and teaching the little mule how to do her duties on set. 'We never actually had to use her, but she was terribly cute a very different kind of beast to Jenny,' smiles Rita. 'It was so hard when Mary was in hospital as it was during Covid restrictions, so I only got to see her twice before she was moved to a hospice. 'Mary was the only person who truly understood what it would take to get Jenny to that place where we could work with her.' 'We got news that her cancer had become aggressive and we had made the decision in summer that she wouldn't go filming as logistically it would have been a nightmare to get from the islands for scans and hospital appointments,' says Rita. I spent the last week with her and she was very peaceful when she passed away. Filming on Banshees ended at the start of November and at the end of that month, Mary who was also Rita's partner for 39 years tragically died, aged 79. As adorable as she looks, the intractable Jenny is living proof of the old adage 'as stubborn as a mule'. Mary was Jenny's chief handler from January 2021, in the months leading up to the pre-production process and shooting on Achill Island and Inishmore. 'The privacy of the new owners needs to be respected too they are a lovely couple who have years of experience working with equines.
