A statement of means was also handed into the court and legal aid was granted. At 11.43 he charged Mr McHale with the murder of Mr Brogan. Gary Mulchrone, solicitor for McHale, said there would be no bail application. The accused made no reply after caution and was handed a true copy of the charge sheet, the court heard. He told the court that he arrested the accused for the purpose of charge at 11.12am this morning. A man made no reply after he was charged with the murder of an 83-year-old at a rural bungalow.

Kevin McHale, of Annagh in Castlebar, appeared before Castlebar District Court shortly before 12.30pm this afternoon.

Judge Lydon agreed to the request and also approved legal aid after she heard the accused receives social welfare. Judge Lydon approved the application and solicitor Gary Mulchrone asked that his client should get any necessary medical treatment including a psychological assessment. Judge Fiona Lydon heard the accused man made no reply when cautioned.

Judge Lydon remanded Kevin McHale in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday.

Detective Sergeant Michael Doherty told the court that he arrested McHale this morning at 11.12am at Castlebar Garda Station for the purpose of charging him.
