This is imperative to drive and scale systems change and sustain the momentum towards gender-inclusive innovation ecosystems. Inclusive design: Innovation products, services and technologies can better reflect the diverse needs and preferences of communities instead of deepening gender biases. This can be done by conducting user research and placing women and gender-diverse people at the centre during testing throughout the development cycle, designing without assumptions of gender roles or preferences, checking for bias, and building gender-diverse design teams. They are key spaces where meaningful engagements between people, resources, institutions, and infrastructure lead to the advancement of ideas, processes, and technologies for all fields of life - from food systems, to health, and the environment. The government is a magnificent machine and has huge machinery, but I have found that there is a trust deficit between the rural community and the government, and the involvement of non-profit organisations can help bridge that gap. We need to understand that all of us have a role to play in solving the problems of poverty, health, sanitation, and education, among others. So you can imagine that the health, dignity, and safety of a woman are compromised due to the lack of a toilet facility at home. There was a study done by the NGO Dasara in 2019, according to which nearly 23 million girls drop out of school annually in India due to a lack of proper sanitation and hygiene management facilities in schools, which include the availability of sanitary pads and information about menstruation. It is important to include the men to allow the women to blossom, and we have done it in the last ten years through our ‘Swades Mitra’ programme. The woman and the eldest girl child of the house, who may have dropped out of school to help the mother. Zarina Screwvala: Besides empowerment, which is the essence and key, the lack of water and sanitation also creates a tremendous amount of gender inequality. Zarina Screwvala: The concept of equality starts in the mind, and so we need to work at the grassroot level of empowering men and women to set their mindsets towards equality and see themselves as leaders of the change. Our reach now is three quarters of a million people, and our idea is to create a model of development that is replicable and sustainable. We must understand that sanitation, education, and health are all connected and result in the empowerment of not just women but every gender. Screwvala shared how Swades has worked towards the upliftment of women and girls through their various programmes such as Swades Mitra and the scholarship programme among others.

The cause of the disparity in education is due to poverty. The key reason behind women’s poverty is the disparity in access and control of economic resources. This, of course, is a personal reflection based on my experience and I appreciate that not all experiences are the same." As a society, we must keep highlighting and embracing the successes of women in STEM – we have a duty to be role models to these young women not just to inspire them, but so that they feel represented. By providing women the opportunity to explore new ways of working, this will not only benefit staff, but organisations as a whole." Statistically, there likely hasn’t been overwhelming progress, but attitudinally there has been a shift; a willingness to discuss and tackle the issue. "Since the start of my career, I’ve seen a broadening of those trying to enact meaningful change. In the technology industry, this is a result of various factors that ultimately stem from systemic bias and stereotyping. Yet, many fail to realise that this has far-reaching consequences: the lack of diverse perspectives and ideas - traits that are the hallmark of successful, progressive companies. “The shift to hybrid workplaces has had clear benefits for working parents and the post- pandemic period has inspired many people to make choices about what’s really important to them. Flexible working arrangements post-pandemic also mean more men are sharing the household and family caring load, which is a wonderful benefit out of the dark days of COVID lockdown.” "Many women, when asked, don’t feel they are discriminated against in the workplace, but the lack of representation in certain roles, in management and on boards as well as gender pay gaps would suggest otherwise. “The technology industry has made great strides in recent years, but women are still underrepresented in both senior leadership positions and in certain roles.

And the pervasive threat of online gender-based violence—coupled with a lack of legal recourse—too often forces them out of the digital spaces they do occupy." Continue to stand up for what you believe in! According to the United Nations (UN), women make up only 22 percent of artificial intelligence (AI) workers globally. We firmly believe that a diverse workforce is essential for driving innovation and growth, and we are proud to accelerate the recruitment of women at all levels and promote them to higher levels of responsibility. It is imperative that the global STEM ecosystem step up and provide women and girls with innovative upskilling opportunities and technology-based education, starting from the grassroots, to unlock a sustainable future for the planet and humankind. While our quest of creating a diverse, equal, and inclusive world will take time, what we can collectively do today and each following day is to sow the seeds of change that will bear fruit in the future. For this to be a reality, younger women must be educated and provided with the right skillsets. In fact, our efforts have been recognized by Avtar The Power of Diversity and Seramount, as we have been named one of the ‘100 Best Companies for Women in India’ for the fourth consecutive year. We are now creating new opportunities for women to break down barriers and succeed in their careers by creating more flexible and inclusive work environments. "I wasn't bought up with football, but if I had gone to a game on my own, I would feel quite intimidated. "I don't see a difference between working in football and working anywhere else. At times, you feel like 'what support have I got?' To know that you've got all these women who have got your back that work in football, it was mind-blowing to me. I have some great women who work in football and after the boardroom incident, various women were messaging me and that meant the world to me. That probably helped because people didn't think I would do something like that and I never planned to and it's not me, I'm a very respectful person. "Everyone works with me on it, from The Valley staff to the training ground, the players. "I’ve had to adjust to my son playing in the first team. It's very easy to put your blinkers on and do your job, but I'm not like that - I'm heart and soul. "It's more about having someone they can trust and come to if they have any issues, which is important as well. A position then opened up at the club, so I came in for an interview and I've been here over eight years now. "I wouldn't say my interest in football really kicked in until I started to work here and, even then, matchdays weren't part of my job. I didn't really watch him play because I was always working, my job was busy on a Saturday so I rarely got to go, but we went out in the evenings with friends from football.
