Irish artist Camille Souter dies aged 93 (The Irish Times)

Work of Achill-based visual artist and Aosdána saoi spanned seven decades.

Her election to Saoi of Aosdána in 2009 was a well-deserved honour and we are grateful for her work. Souter was an honorary member of the RHA and a member of Aosdána. She pointed to Souter’s “profound contribution to the visual arts in Ireland [which] cannot be underestimated. Souter was born in England but her family moved to Ireland when she was a child. She lived there for most of her life. From her early paintings, which veered towards the abstract, to more representational figurative work, “Souter’s interest in the everyday, the things she encountered on her journey through life was a constant,” the Arts Council said in a statement released on Friday.

All artists, especially those who don’t play art-world games, need good patrons, and in Goulding, as well as to a degree in the architect Michael Scott, Souter had that in spades. Remote suited her, and she is most closely associated with Achill, the Co Mayo island also famous as home for a time to the artist Paul Henry and the German writer Heinrich Böll. She also had a wit and intelligence that could undercut pretension and avoid the traps of sentimentality. TB was often a death sentence in those days, and the treatment could be brutal. She went to Glengara Park School, in Dún Laoghaire, before returning to London to train as a nurse. [died at the age of 93](https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/art/2023/03/03/irish-artist-camille-souter-dies-aged-93/), did us all the great favour of looking more closely at small things and finding the richness within.
