“As a football club we have four good centre-backs, and when you look at Tonks [James Tomkins] or Chris [Richards], every time that they played, they did really well for the team, and this is what I want as a manager: to have those kinds of options. “We just need to keep working hard and to keep pushing, and we just need that little bit of luck. We only lost once, but we didn’t win any games, so outside of those numbers, it’s about the performances of the team in and out of possession. I expect more from some players in the squad to perform at a better level. Jean-Philippe Mateta dutifully added a third late on and the Eagles could not be caught. Regarding the remained of the campaign, Ayew feels his side want: “To finish as high as possible. we should have won that game, but were unlucky – it’s part of the game. Looking ahead to Saturday, Ayew continued: “We’ve been playing really well in the last three games. If you win the next two it looks quite good, so I think we need to stay positive and be positive. “We know which kind of team we are going to face. “They have had mixed results but you can see their players, the way they play under the new manager is positive, so I expect a tough game. He swipes at the volley and it’s blocked behind for a corner.

Still 1-0 to Villa but you do feel that they need that second to kill the game. The manger was trying to get myself, Emi Buendia and Jacob Ramsey into those spaces and use the full-backs. After that we had a decent first-half performance. I know we're getting a little bit greedy after three points but when they go down to 10 men, we have to adapt better. We ground out the three points. Ollie Watkins could equal Andy Gray’s 46-year record later should the striker score for the sixth match running. Great to get the three points and it gives us an opportunity to look up and not down. I'm sure the manager won't be pleased with the second-half performance but it's a win and we've been craving a win here for a while. A little bit of mixed emotions. Our dedicated live match blog, below, will automatically update. [Jed Steer](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/all-about/aston-villa-fc) (Achilles), [Diego Carlos](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/all-about/aston-villa-fc) (Achilles), [Leander Dendoncker](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/all-about/aston-villa-fc) (personal reasons) and Philippe Coutinho (hamstring) today, while [Robin Olsen](https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/all-about/aston-villa-fc) will return to the matchday squad having missed the last three with an injury. I think he is close to the national team and that is good because we have our collective challenge here, but it is also necessary for every player to have personal challenges as well.”

Aston Villa welcome Crystal Palace to Villa Park as both midtable teams will earmark this as a game they should win to boost their top 10 hopes.

Aston Villa 1-0 Crystal Palace. Aston Villa lead and it’s a really unfortunate own goal from Joachim Andersen. Wilfried Zaha has the ball in the net after a lovely pass forward and he rounded Emiliano Martinez before slotting home… Awful news for Palace. This will be very open in the second half. Great news for Villa.

Aston Villa 1-0 Crystal Palace: Joachim Andersen's own goal seals ... (Sky Sports)

Report and free highlights as Aston Villa secured a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Villa Park; Joachim Andersens first-half own goal was the difference ...

We did it against Liverpool and always at home we find the strength to compete at the level we can do. "Of course, we can analyse the match and the first half, and second half were very different. "Our idea was to win with a clean sheet - we did it. Up next for Crystal Palace is a Premier League home match against Manchester City next Saturday at 5.30pm, live on Sky Sports. To keep everybody confident, it was an important victory. VAR ruled the goal out for a tight offside call, but Zaha showed his worth to Palace and the threat he carries. But we had a couple of tough games and at times we defended and played quite well. Zaha returned from a hamstring injury for Crystal Palace at Aston Villa after missing Vieira's side's last four games with Palace failing to get a win in his absence. He got a goal early on which was disallowed for a tight offside, but I did think he went slightly too early. On a tricky run of fixtures coming up: "Of course getting a result is important. Wilfried Zaha made his return to the Crystal Palace starting XI after missing four games with a hamstring injury. It's important for us to bounce back and start winning games.

But McGinn then set up the Villa goal, threading a pass into the path of Cash as he charged down the right. McGinn had another glorious chance in the 84th minute as Chambers led a charge down field and the ball was cut back for the Scotsman in space on the penalty spot, but he took too long to pull the trigger and his shot was charged down. Cash sent in a low ball for Watkins, but Andersen got their first, sliding in to clear but instead diverting the ball past Vicente Guaita.

Aston Villa player ratings vs Crystal Palace as Cash and McGinn ... (Birmingham Live)

Here's the verdict from Villa Park as Aston Villa record back-to-back victories in the Premier League following last week's win over Everton.

CALUM CHAMBERS ON FOR KAMARA, 60 MINUTES: Came on in midfield given the lack of options on Villa’s bench. Watkins then should have made it six in six but missed an absolute sitter on the stroke of half-time. Much quieter after the restart and it was no surprise to see his number called with Bailey his replacement with 20 minutes remaining. BOUBACAR KAMARA: The Frenchman possesses a lovely crossfield ping on him and, again, he worked well with Douglas next to him as the pair offered for the ball to start Villa’s patient attacks forward. Got forward a lot in the second half as he desperately looked for his first goal in 46 matches. The Spaniard enjoyed a lot of the ball in the first half and drove down the flank and looked to pop balls in for the likes of Watkins and Buendia. TYRONE MINGS: Involved in a few mix-ups with Martinez, first clearing needlessly for a corner under no pressure and, afterwards, being charged down by Ayew after Martinez rushed his pass out to him. EZRI KONSA: Had his heart in his mouth as Zaha ran off him to score but for VAR to come to Villa’s rescue. Martinez’s positioning was bang on the money, rushing out well to mop up long balls up to the likes of Eze and Zaha. The midfielder had to be carried off by Villa’s medics and he headed straight down the tunnel with Calum Chambers his replacement in midfield given Villa’s lack of options on their eight-man bench. Watkins, under no pressure whatsoever, curled wide of the far post, a chance you’d have put your house on him scoring given his recent five-goal streak. And there was Andersen, under pressure from Ollie Watkins, who steered the ball into his own net to put Villa one goal to the good.
