"Yeah, one thing I hadn't considered at all was if we were unsuccessful, that it might have a kind of detrimental effect to some people in my family. For more from the biggest stars in TV, listen to [The Radio Times Podcast](https://www.radiotimes.com/audio/podcasts/). That gave us comfort to proceed and Disney were kind enough to want to document the journey." The team were incredible and would go from base camp directly to camp fall in a single push. Speaking of Bear and Nims, he adds: "From then on, my mind just just raced with the possibility of doing this ourselves. He continues: "I had never realised that body recovery on Everest was even possible prior to receiving that photo. "I had conversations with my family," he explains. The highest mountain in the world at 8,849 metres high, Mount Everest attracts hundreds of climbers every year, and has a 14.1 per cent fatality rate. However, on the way down from the summit he disappeared and was presumed dead. I like the fact that people who watch it seem, to me at least, to feel an emotional connection towards it. And they are moved by it in some way," he tells us. At the time, a 22-year-old Michael had become the youngest Briton to climb Mount Everest.

Finding Michael review – Spencer Matthews goes on a haunting ... (The Guardian)

This incredibly moving documentary follows the reality TV star as he retraces his brother's last steps on Mount Everest – and makes many shocking ...

We are reminded of the sheer scale of the loss of life, and to see it so plainly is shocking. The fact that this is exceptional is never more clear than later on in the film, when the notion that there might be only one body to find up there is disabused. Spencer goes to meet some of his brother’s old climbing friends, to find out what he can about how to identify Michael, and how best to brief the experts who are willing to go into the death zone and look for him. It brings Michael to life by piecing together who he was, through friends and family members remembering him, and through photographs and video, including one haunting piece of film from his last night alive. In Finding Michael his younger brother, the reality TV star Spencer Matthews, embarks on a very personal mission to locate the body of his brother and bring him home to rest, more than 20 years later. In 2017, the Matthews family received a photograph of a body on Everest that looked as if it might be wearing the same colour summit suit that Michael was wearing when he went missing.

Finding Michael: What happened to Spencer Matthews' brother ... (cosmopolitan.com)

In a new documentary on Disney+, Spencer Matthews joins an expert team to search for his brother who went missing while climbing Mount Everest in 1999.

During the adverse weather, Micheal was separated from the pack and found himself in the 'Death Zone' – a notorious area more than 8,000 metres above sea level. He was the youngest Brit to reach its peak, but on the way down, Micheal and his team were hit with heavy snow and strong gales. Micheal Matthews was the brother of Made in Chelsea star Spencer Matthews. He also went on to say: “It has been a difficult journey to document, both physically and emotionally but I’m hoping that it will give my brave brother the legacy that he deserves.” I found myself valuing my sobriety and the path that I’m now on,” he continued. Spencer was just 10-years-old when his brother went missing, and unsurprisingly has always struggled to accept that Michael will never come back.

The Matthews family and Michael’s friends must be commended for revisiting his loss in such detail, discussing his final moments, and the possible causes of his untimely death. But it’s not that straightforward: they’re basing their entire search off a five-year-old photo and, effectively, blind faith that it’s Michael, who sadly is one of the hundreds that have lost their lives trying to climb the highest peak in the world. Over the course of Finding Michael, he retraces his older sibling’s steps through Nepal in the hope of retrieving his body and more importantly, giving his parents and siblings the closure they need.

Finding Michael, Disney+, review: Spencer Matthews searches for ... (iNews)

The emotional stakes are high in this nerve-wracking film. Not just because of Michael's death, but because of the dangers of climbing Everest.

Watching Spencer visit the same villages, bathe in the same natural pools and be blessed in the same temples is incredibly poignant. When Spencer delivers the body of a sherpa to a local family, it is not a happy reunion. The only tears come from Spencer’s wife Vogue Williams, who gave birth just eight days before her husband was due to leave for Nepal, and Dave Rodney, a Canadian who was on the same expedition as Michael in 1999. His whole family, he explains, are stoic to a fault, each of them very pragmatic about both Michael’s death and his potential return home. “I’m going to find that difficult,” he retorts, and for a moment you worry Spencer is going to insist on travelling further up the mountain and risking the same fate as his brother. In 1999, 22-year-old Michael Matthews became the youngest ever Briton to reach the peak of Mount Everest.
