There's such a huge selection of books, no matter what you like to read, and it separates its books into categories, which is great if you're in the market for something new. But I've learned throughout the last couple of years that it's simply not realistic to buy every book if you desire; not in this cost of living crisis anyway. It was touch and go last year when Chapters revealed they were closing down. The World holiday seems to have inspired the masses, as every second person on my morning commute to work had a book in hand, which was lovely to see. I read it around 6 years ago, and it is one of the books I haven’t stopped thinking about since. Based on a poem inspired by her portrait, The Marriage Portrait is a brilliant lesson is dramatic tension as we build up to Lucrezia’s inevitable fate. I first read the book as a teen, and I have never forgotten how it made me feel. Set in Alabama, a bored housewife accidentally befriends an elderly woman living in a nursing home while her husband is visiting his mother. Set in Renaissance Italy, it tells the story of Lucrezia, fifth child of Cosimo de’ Medici – the all-powerful Grand Duke of Tuscany at the time. It was recommended to me by a friend who said she’s never laughed and cried so much while reading a book. I read it in a week. [Pachinko by Min Jin Lee](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pachinko-Min-Jin-Lee/dp/178669137X?keywords=pachinko&qid=1677755949&sprefix=pachin%2Caps%2C72&sr=8-1&linkCode=ll1&tag=womenshealthmag.co.uk-21&linkId=41e90e29ac0d22fa0318330a66d154c8&language=en_GB&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) which comes in at a very close second, this book had me on the edge of my seat for an entire five hour flight. So, instead, I’m recommending one I read recently and loved: On top of just being an enjoyable activity, reading has been proven to improve the memory, focus, empathy and communication skills of those who read regularly. A year later, she was dead, with rumours abounding she was murdered. Lots of the story, such as the prejudice and intolerance gay people faced in post war Ireland, is rooted in fact but the story itself is beautifully crafted, often heartbreaking fiction.

World Book Day: How Reading Can Help Catalyze Children's ... (Simple Flying)

To celebrate World Book Day in the UK, Simple Flying has put together some must-reads for budding young aviators.

The competition allows us to further engage with the schools in our community and offers a unique chance for students to share their work with the millions of passengers who will travel from London Stansted on their summer holidays this year.” Although the books were not specifically linked to aviation, the scheme highlighted the importance that reading plays in childhood development. Unfortunately, London Stansted Airport has not held the competition again since the pandemic struck. The lucky winners also received a series of prizes, including an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of London Stansted Airport. For each one, it gives a series of facts and figures, helping children young and old to distinguish between different aircraft types. The winning entries were then published in a special book that was distributed to the millions of passengers who passed through the airport that summer.

Roald Dahl is the last thing we should worry about on World Book Day (The Guardian)

More important than culture-war noise are the multiple threats to British children learning to love books of any kind.

World Book Day is a chance to celebrate the power and pleasure of reading, to help our children build the apparatus of happiness within themselves. But whatever you think of the rights and wrongs of sensitivity reading, surely it’s equally important that all our children have access to a couple of shelves of books and a corner to read them in. His breakthrough piece – Shot Down Over Libya – is the story of how he saved himself when he crashed his plane in the desert. That first encounter with Trunchbull when – without having even seen her – she convinces herself that Matilda is the root of all her problems and whips herself into a fury about it, is both terrifying and prophetic. Sometimes advocating for children in this country feels like a niche enthusiasm instead of the future of the nation. I really hope that – apart from spreading light and magic – World Book Day throws some light on the impact this the crisis has on children. It’s making a huge difference but it would have a been a lot easier if our media showed a fraction of the interest they showed in Roald Dahl’s vocabulary in our children. This year, Leslie Manser school in Lincoln is making a food bank collection part of its World Book Day celebration because the latest threat to the fun is the cost of living crisis. I felt that his snobbery was directed at people like me and that his addiction to revenge was not good. But schools pushed back and now instead of parades of children dressed in expensive landfill, you’ll find schools where the pupils come dressed in their pyjamas and cosy up to listen to stories, making the day into one long dreamy sleepover. Another where the teachers sat in their classrooms reading their favourite stories and the kids could chose which one to go and listen to. Now, of course, Matilda has become a battlefield in

Asunder was the third Dragon Age book and it filled a hole between the second game coming out and the third - Inquisition. But more importantly, it built up the idea of becoming a Spectre - a super-elite soldier chosen to do the Galactic Council's bidding, and given permission to basically act as they see fit. And it was a revelation, this book. Or more specifically: that one bit on the little starter island while everyone's loading into PUBG, and Lord of the Flies. Not satisfied with creating a procedural Thatcherite universe filled with trading, dog-fighting, and a pure thrill of exploration, the original Elite shipped with a novella by Robert Holdstock, called The Dark Wheel. Their book seamlessly alternates between the present time, before we meet the team in the 2021 game, and 12 years before that, where a young Peter Quill encounters Ko-Rel while battling the Chitarui on Mercury.

If there’s a picture of a dog in a book, talk about a dog you know. After reading a book several times, your baby will anticipate hearing the change in tone and may well show this with a smile, a wiggle or a giggle. Looking at and talking about the pictures is a great way to encourage your child to enjoy books. If you speak a language other than English, talk about the pictures and story in your own language. Watching and listening shows how interested you are in hearing what children have to say and encourages communication development. It can be very calming and will help your baby recognise the sound of your voice. Sharing books with babies and toddlers helps to inspire a lifelong love of reading.
