Wexford hospital fire: More than 200 patients evacuated and wards ... (Irish Mirror)

The decision was made to close the hospital as patients were transferred to other hospitals around the country.

Gardai and emergency services attended the scene. As the smoke plumed over the area people living close to the hospital were advised to close their windows and doors and turn off all air ventilators as smoke continued to billow from the roof of the building. 11 units from Wexford Fire Services attended the scene of the fire and fire fighters loaded with breathing apparatus entered the building in a bid to quench the blaze. As the blaze began to spread to the roof of the building, patients were removed to day care wards and other wards in the hospital with staff reporting that there were no casualties during the operation. Firefighters were called to the hospital at approximately 4pm as a fire appeared to take hold in the old part of the hospital to the rear of the building and sent huge plumes of smoke out over Wexford town. Hospital management have now taken the decision to close the hospital following extensive smoke and water damage with a major operation now in place to have the patients transferred to hospitals throughout the region and Dublin.

Also speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Councillor George Lawlor said it is remarkable that so few patients remain and a "war-like" effort has been under way to safely transport patients from the hospital. Speaking on the same programme, she said there had been a lot of controversy about a proposed 96-bed block for the hospital and there was now a prime opportunity to fast track that process regardless of where it is. A senior fire officer has said the level of damage caused by yesterday's blaze at Wexford General Hospital is "medium to small", and the hospital should be able to resume operations within a matter of days.

I will be receiving an update on the situation on Thursday. It will take some time, I think, before we have an assessment of how quickly we can get the services back up and running and of course what it will cost.” We need to be certain that services are safe to access. I think we really need to acknowledge that extraordinary emergency response and secondly, the response from the wider healthcare service. “Technical assessors are on site assessing the damage and deciding which areas can be switched on safely. “As of now, we have no reports even of any injury for patients or the workforce from what has happened.
