Why do we wear daffodils and leeks on St David's Day? (WalesOnline)

Today is St David's Day, or Dydd Gŵyl Dewi as we say in Welsh. Perhaps many of us will be wearing our favourite Welsh rugby or football shirt, ...

Former UK Prime Minister and Welsh politician, David Lloyd George was said to be an advocate of the daffodil being used as a symbol. Tudor royal household accounts list several payments for leeks in connection with St David's Day and Henry VIII is said to have presented his daughter with a leek for the festival. [Cardiff University](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/all-about/cardiff-university) with a special interest in Welsh folklore, there are many legends purporting to explain the origin of the leek's connection with Wales. They are now part of the same family as Anglesey sea salt, Welsh lamb, Welsh beef and Pembrokeshire Earlies. St David had been a popular saint in Wales since the 12th century, and his feast day became a national festival during the 18th century. On a match day at [Cardiff](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/all-about/cardiff) city centre, you'll often find Welsh fans adorned in daffodils or leeks in some way or another.

Kate Middleton receives St David's Day gift from star-struck toddler (Daily Mail)

Mother-of-three Kate, 41, left little Cora Phillips, two, with a grin on her face after accepting the toddler's sweet gift of daffodils ahead of St David's ...

After the 45-second race - in which the mother-of-three even asked if she could turn the bike’s resistance up and ‘make it harder’ - a shocked princess was declared the winner of the ‘Tour de Aberavon’ and handed a small trophy. Later in the day on a visit to a Aberavon Leisure and Fitness Centre in Port Talbot, Kate made a beeline for a group of young girls in pretty leotards and asked them: ‘Can you do the splits?’ Later in the visit, the Princess, who was dressed in a thrifty dogtooth skirt from Zara, hopped up onto an exercise bike alongside her husband as the pair raced each other during a spin class - and sporty Kate put William to shame as she stormed to victory. Little Cora Phillips, two, was able to give the Princess of Wales a posy of daffodils ahead of St David's Day on a meeting at Brynawel Rehabilitation Centre in Pontyclun near Cardiff As the princess leaned in with a smile to thank Cora for her kind gesture, the toddler, who was dressed in an adorable heart-printed coat, smiled back at her. A toddler was pictured looking a little bit star-struck as she met a real-life princess - and even managed to hand her a gift.

Add the egg - and - raisin mixture and gently combine to form a dough. When the pan is hot, place the Welsh cake in the pan, a few at a time and cook for about 1 ½ minutes on each side, until golden brown. Transfer the hot Welsh cake to a plate and sprinkle with a little sugar. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to a thickness of 0.75cm. Once they start to crisp and caramelise, lower the heat and continue to cook keeping a check that they don't burn. In a frying pan melt 2 tbsp butter and demerara sugar and add the shredded leeks, coat them in the butter/sugar and turn the heat high.

Established by the Welsh Labour government – and made possible by devolution – DBW brings a dedicated service that is in touch with and trusted by Welsh businesses. It gives confidence to new Welsh speakers like me to use the language and has shown people – whatever their background – that the language belongs to everyone who makes Wales their home. The catastrophic threat posed by the climate and nature emergencies means that we must bring people together around a vision that allows Wales to anchor the jobs that we are ideally placed to win. That means going further to tackle abuse in the workplace, and organisations like the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Net Zero Wales will put us at the forefront of work to meet the demands of the climate emergency, with our aim to make Wales a net-zero nation by 2050. Port Talbot is the beating heart of a Welsh and UK industry that is good for security and integral to a just transition. As economy minister, I’ll be working with trade unions and businesses to develop workplace training to help work in Wales become more inclusive and open. Our Business Wales service, for example, is engaging better with diverse communities to increase business start-ups and growth amongst Black, Asian and minority ethnic people. From housing and construction to care and food, we are turning the demand for the everyday economy into new opportunities for better jobs in stronger local businesses. The latest census data shows us that Wales is becoming more diverse in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and spoken languages. As Davies rightly pointed out, Wales is a country not lacking in hills, so the creation of a new one does seem unnecessary. I was reflecting on this story recently as we marked 25 years since we in Wales raised a hill beneath our own feet – and this one was anything but superfluous.
