IRELAND'S Drugs Minister Hildegarde Naughton has revealed that she tried cannabis in her 20s as she calls for an open and honest debate on drug poli.

The Minister said he is in favour of a health led approach to addiction but claimed there is a “world of difference” between addiction and recreational drug use which can fund criminal gangs. “The taking of such drugs is illegal and it is my job as Minister for Justice funnily enough to stand by the laws of the country and support the gardai in their work in relation to this matter.” He added: “The reality of the situation here is that there is a very significant prevalence of drug use in our country. "I think it is going to be an opportunity for us as a society to have an open and honest conversation about drug use in Ireland and how that feeds into policy and that’s what I want as Minister with responsibility for the drug strategy to ensure that what comes out of the Citizens’ Assembly feeds then into the policy that we can implement. He urged people to report drug use to the gardai and claimed the recreational use of drugs is far too prevalent in Ireland.
