“I think John B is just a kid struggling to find consistency in his life and hoping that he finds it,” Stokes told The Maroon when asked about his character’s motivations. Outer Banks has never been, and continues not to be, a show one watches for the nuance; it is filmed largely in dramatic close-ups, intercut with shaky-cam action, and seems to contain at least one long flashback scene and a couple of etiolated monologues per episode. A fine cast—Pankow as JJ and Charles Esten as Ward in particular— are on the verge of having their characters betrayed by the script, only to be rescued by the season’s final two episodes. There’s almost no exploration of the contrast between life on the Outer Banks and on the protagonists’ island paradise, Poguelandia. The Chicago Maroon spoke with Outer Banks (OBX) stars Chase Stokes (John B) and Rudy Pankow (JJ) about the future of the hit show and the challenges of maintaining OBX’s relatability amid an increasingly chaotic plot. The first season of OBX spent most of its time in the titular Outer Banks of North Carolina, where the Pogues (working class teenagers John B, JJ, and Pope, plus their friends Kiara and Sarah) both argued and and physically fought with the islands’ kooks, (wealthy resident teens Kelce, Topper, and Sarah’s brother Rafe).

Outer Banks Season 3 proves even the most trashy of television shows can go from being ridiculous fun to just plain trash.
When we get informed of a story of a test that must be passed and one of the characters remarks that there is always such a barrier to reaching their goal, they might as well have been referring to the path of the show itself. As long as there are more seasons to come, there will always be a need for Outer Banks to keep playing it safe so that the characters will be able to continue almost discovering something significant before the story falls back into the vacuous hole it won't dig out of. Even when there is a shootout on the water, it is so clumsily staged that it feels almost like a joke. In this journey, he encounters some of the more violent elements of the show thus far, which could be a sign of the story going into some darker territory. It is a rather awkward start that is meant to be the moment that gets us hooked for the road ahead, but it proves to be fortuitous in how everything in Season 3 doesn’t ever uncover any fun either. After they find their way back, the narrative itself remains a wandering one where a lot is going on, with little of it actually feeling like it matters.

But that puts a target on Rafe’s back, and so Ward takes the blame for the death of both John B.’s dad and Sheriff Peterkin. And so as season 3 lands on Netflix, it’s useful to revisit a few of the key turning points of seasons 1 and 2. But it might ease your anxiety just enough to settle back into the lovely, blurry haze of the adventure. Trying to remember what, precisely, led the so-called Pogues down the road to El Dorado—yes, literally, that’s the end goal of season 3—is a bit like recalling equations from a math test taken under the influence.
