I lost by one vote in my election in 2019 and I called a recount and won by one vote. If I hadn’t gotten that council seat I wouldn’t have gotten my Dáil seat and there would be no TDs in all of Cork city and county. I felt very envious of my friends growing up because they knew what they wanted to be and I always wanted to be one of those people that was more sure. In transition year we did an online test to see what career we should go for and everyone got nurse, architect and barrister, however I got a baggage handler at the airport! The importance of voting is huge and if we lose that we’re going to be at a huge disadvantage. One of the things we’re seeing separate from that is more and more people feeling disenfranchised by absence of access to housing and healthcare and they’re losing faith in our democratic political system. That’s probably a really predictable thing to say, but I think she’s an incredible leader and a really strong politician. Waterford Whispers had a headline saying “Politician Doesn’t Cling Onto Power” and I think we’re so used to seeing that. He is the first baby in our family and waiting to see him was excruciating. My uncle Caleb always said to be truthful, be gentle and to be fearless. I think it’s amazing that they started a party from scratch. People say things to appease the electorate because they think that’s what needs to be said.

Ms Murphy said timing was the “absolute main reason” and both insisted that none of their four parliamentary party colleagues asked them to consider their positions. “It’s a quiet enough time in politics,” Ms Shortall said, adding that the party wanted to ensure that the next leader would have time to bed in ahead of the local and European elections in May 2024.

Apart from Gary Gannon, her other rivals will be the SocDems other TDs, Dublin Fingal’s Cian O’Callaghan and Wicklow’s Jennifer Whitmore. And party insiders believe her strong rural background, combined with her outspoken support for progressive policies for women, on the environment and for housing and education, gives her broad appeal for younger voters who are expected to big say in the next general election.
