Mikel Arteta Success Shows Why Chelsea Must Stand By Graham ... (Forbes)

Graham Potter is under pressure as Chelsea manager with the Blues now without a win in their last five matches in all competitions.

They are the ones who hired Potter with a vision in mind and then quickly deviated from that vision. They are the ones who threw too many new signings at the wall in the hope that one or two would stick. Chelsea are without a win in their last five matches in all competitions with defeats to Borussia Dortmund and Southampton deepening the sense of malaise around the club. Chelsea continue to reiterate their faith in Potter and they should look at Arteta’s success this season as reason for standing by the 47-year-old. The Blues are 13 points off the pace being set by Arsenal at the top of the Premier League and are languishing firmly in mid-table. It’s no wonder Potter is struggling to find the right formula.

Chelsea must give Graham Potter more time (Telegraph.co.uk)

I saw four Chelsea managers get the sack as a player but Potter is sticking to his principles and not just looking after himself.

He had his methods and who was to say what was right and what was wrong. Yet he was also left with players who really should have left and will not be happy still to be there. Didier Drogba was out of favour with him and I presume he was not happy about it but that never affected Didier’s work ethic. The periodisation model has become universal now, but Big Phil had his way and that was how it went. You have to suppose that Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali, the principals of the consortium in charge, will admire that. Chelsea had the players to win that game, but in the Premier League there is always the possibility you might lose. When you factor in other aspects – like the players who can see their time coming to an end at the club, Potter has been stoic about it – no blaming his players, or the referees, or anyone else. Their game time needs managing and by taking the decision to leave them out he paid a bigger price than he would have anticipated. But the real test of how firmly you believe in them comes when things are going badly. Then, when Potter was asked about his reaction the following week, he said that it was just not how he wanted to behave. He was not going to change just because results were not going his way.

"It cost Chelsea a chance to win the game there, through no fault of their own. You can negate that by controlling the narrative from that presser there." The incident caused a lot of debate at the time and on social media with many furious a penalty was not given, however Graham Potter opted for a different approach.

Arsenal will be in a situation soon where they have to make a decision, do they go for the league or have a run at the Europa League. That just shows you he's got the respect of the club and he runs the show. When push comes to shove I think Manchester City have to win the Champions League - surely they haven't bought in Erling Haaland to win the Premier League for the fourth time in five years. He's now going to miss a final that he might never get the chance to play in again. I think the rules have got to change. I think if you're chasing one you've got a chance but not two. I look at the players and I don't get it. I don't see anything but a Man United win now. He's just been beaten at home by bottom of the league and he's still there so maybe they will stick by him. Get rid of David Moyes and they will get relegated. I like him as a manager but I look at the quality of the players and I question it. The best two players this season have been Reece James and Thiago Silva - he didn't play either of those two players, he looked after them.

The Chelsea head coach decided to rest both Silva goes without saying, because as we saw at the weekend, Chelsea properly miss the 38-year-old when he is not present in the team. New co-owner [Todd Boehly](https://www.football.london/all-about/todd-boehly) had just spent around £250million on eight new signings going into the season and there were huge expectations from supporters in regards to the new campaign. Potter will undoubtedly be doing his homework on Spurs as we speak and the 2-2 draw with the north Londoners in August will have been watched by the Blues boss. It's become like that because of the recent dominance in this fixture. It was really impressive and one we haven't witnessed from the Blues, albeit under a new head coach now, over six months on. Chelsea got off to the perfect start when [Kalidou Koulibaly](https://www.football.london/all-about/kalidou-koulibaly)'s emphatic finish put the Blues 1-0 up in west London. It was so refreshing to see a Blues side on the front foot and looking dangerous every time they went forward. It was a manic game.
