Prior to that, Gracia had led Malaga to successive top-half finishes in LaLiga. However, he was sacked four games into the 2019/20 season after just one point from their first four games. Gracia, though, will be eager to make a rapid impression. Indeed, the 52-year-old comes in initially until the end of the season.

"My mission as a manager is to get the best out of the players that I have, and you have to adapt to do that," he told Sky Sports. Bielsa arrived in the summer of 2018, with a full pre-season to prepare and a remit to rebuild from top to bottom. He is entering a fire fight mid-season and he will need to make the most of what he's got. "The lads have bought into his ideas and he puts them across really well. Four years on, this group of Leeds players may soon feel the same. It remains to be seen whether Gracia will get the chance to oversee a full season in charge of Leeds. Like Leeds this season, the Hornets ranked highly among Premier League sides in 2018/19 in terms of high turnovers and possessions won in the final third. "So, I think you have to be flexible and see what characteristics your players have. They are qualities Leeds will need if they are to stay in the Premier League this season. Watford survived, finishing the 2017/18 campaign eight points clear of the drop zone in 14th, and Gracia built from there. Watford feared they may be sliding towards that same fate when he took over in January 2018 amid the turbulence of Everton's failed approach for Marco Silva, but Gracia steadied things. Even by the standards of the club's Pozzo owners, it was ruthless.

Wins, width and cotton wool: what Javi Gracia must find to revive ... (The Guardian)

After Gracia's appointment as Jesse Marsch's successor at Leeds we identify the key tasks facing the manager and the help he could use.

A more measured approach could be combined with pressing in the right places at the appropriate moments, but Gracia still does not need to become a slave to philosophy. All too often in recent months Leeds have lacked much semblance of midfield control and failed to protect a defence probably not good enough to hold such a high-pressing, high-risk line. Rodrigo, a real Marsch favourite, has done well for Leeds this season, scoring 10 goals in 19 Premier League appearances, but he is a striker better suited to a deeper-lying role and is sidelined by an ankle injury that could take another two months to heal. [defeat at Nottingham Forest](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/feb/05/nottingham-forest-leeds-united-premier-league-match-report) that proved to be Marsch’s last game in charge, he, politely, deconstructed the gameplan. The 49er group has an option to increase its 44% stake by early next year, but the deal would almost certainly be placed in jeopardy by a fall into the Championship. A back three, perhaps featuring Max Wöber or Pascal Struijk in the central, sweeping role may afford increased stability.

Leeds appoint former Watford manager Gracia (BBC Sport)

Leeds United say they have agreed terms with former Watford boss Javi Gracia to replace Jesse Marsch as manager.

He has one job and that is to keep them up, it is going to be very, very difficult." "He has Premier League experience and he is available. As well as relief, there is the feeling he knows what he is doing. "I think as soon as it got to this stage, they have left it too late. I have been to see him a few times in old jobs and he develops a very close relationship with players, he was a player himself at the top level. He is a great reader of games. Devoid of ideas, no goal threat, they had to appoint someone. And he knows what is required. "There is credibility here because he has done well at Watford in the past. "Let's forget any long-termism. He is quiet when he has to be, raises his voice when he has to. Because if they have to become more defensive, he will be able to adjust that, if they need more goals, he will also be able to do it in training.
