Allianz Football League Round 3: All you need to know (RTE.ie)

SATURDAY 18 FEBRUARY. Division 1. Mayo v Kerry, Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, 7.30pm. Division 2. Derry v Meath, Owenbeg, 5pm. Division 3

Dessie Dolan's team lost out to Cavan at the end of the January - what odds they'll meet again in the league final? In another blow to the credibility of the O'Byrne Cup - as if it could take much more - the 2023 champions have probably been the most out-of-sorts team in the league. They travel to Fermanagh, the hosts having smashed Longford in the opening round at Brewster Park. Mickey Harte's side have been desperately unlucky in their two matches, to date and are surely due a result from the Gods. The Rossies have been zinging from Division 2 to Division 1 and back again for the guts of seven years but they're in position to go better in 2023, after early wins against a subdued Tyrone in Round 1 and then a dramatic victory in a grimly low-scoring affair in Salthill. Walsh is, however, back in the starting line-up for the trip to Derry. The Dubs have sleepwalked through their opening two games, lumbering past Kildare in a low-paced game in Croke Park on the opening night. Glenn Ryan was curt in post-match interviews, plainly miffed and frustrated by the manner of the no-show. The team is at it was against Monaghan, except Paudie Clifford is named to start this time in place of Adrian Spillane. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in moderate southwest winds, freshening in the northwest and west through the afternoon. Sunday: Rain over Ulster will clear eastwards during the morning, leaving a mostly dry day though there will be some patchy light rain and drizzle, mainly in the west and northwest. TG4 will show the meeting of Mayo and Kerry, coverage starting at 7.10pm for a 7.30pm throw in.

(All at 2.0 unless stated). Allianz Football League. Division 1. Galway v Tyrone Tuam Stadium, 1.45. TG4 Deferred. Live on TG4 app.

Cavan are unbeaten and have the second best points difference in the division of plus 15. Carlow had a four-point win over Waterford, and they drew with Wicklow despite being reduced to 14 men. VERDICT: Cavan This was a typical Tyrone effort – full of commitment and intensity, with the players’ work-rate top class. VERDICT: Down Despite all the kudos they received in the wake of last year’s All-Ireland final, Galway have secured just one league point from four. But, in truth, that game was over by half-time. Mayo demonstrated the full force of McStayball in a blinding performance against All-Ireland champions Kerry in the Allianz National League.

[Kevin McStay](https://cms.sportsjoe.ie/gaa/kevin-mcstay-mayo-manager-270491) promised he would play a much more expansive and dynamic style of football compared to previous Mayo sides, and he's beginning to deliver on that promise. Whatever you say about the time of year, and the relevance of this game when the summer arrives, a win over the champions will do Mayo the world of good in terms of confidence. Impressive Mayo get first win with seven point victory over Kerry (Irish Examiner)

Kerry were abysmal in the first half and fortunate to only by ten down at the break. In the end it was a comfortable seven-point victory for the home side.

There was one more minor flashpoint as O’Shea and Casey continued to wrestle on the deck afterwards but in truth it was just one more bit of theatre for 15,726 paying spectators. A long Paul Murphy floater found Barry O’Sullivan on the edge of the square for a green flag and Dara Moynihan popped over a point right after. Kerry were lost in a house of horrors. In the 20th minute he let loose with a sensational long kickpass for an O’Donoghue mark. In the end it was a comfortable seven-point victory for the home side. The opening goal stemmed from a floating kick-out towards Pa Warren, broken and scooped up a sprinting O’Donoghue who circumvented Tadgh Morley to acrobatically tap past Shane Murphy. David McBrien played lion tamer for the second half and attempted to stop the unstoppable David Clifford. First he collected a long ball and fed James Carr for a Ryan O’Donoghue free. They were out walking a dark pitch in Castlebar an hour and a half before throw-in. Every entry in his orbit resulted in excitement from the crowd and fear from the opposition. Kerry were abysmal in the first half and fortunate to only by ten down at the break. A one-way ticket along the wonderful yellow brick road.
