He was found guilty of Cameron’s murder and sentenced to life in prison, as reported by [The Independent ](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/police-traced-laundered-money-around-the-world-detectives-described-it-as-a-typical-old-kent-road-armed-robbery-except-that-this-gang-had-pounds-26m-worth-of-gold-to-dispose-of-david-connett-reports-1540983.html)in 1992, that laundered money was then invested. Police estimate much of the gold would have been sold on to legitimate dealers, with the money that was subsequently made then laundered through companies around the world in locations including the Bahamas, the Channel Islands, Spain and Florida. Krays' associate George Francis, who was once questioned in regards to the Brink's-Mat money, was gunned down outside his south London office in 2003. He was shot and killed at his Essex home in 2015, as reported by The early intake of ecstasy into Britain came directly through Brink's-Mat money that was made from the job and then ploughed back into ecstasy, which was a brand-new drug. Inside man Tony Black was sentenced to six years for his role in the robbery. Black was also found guilty for his role as the inside man – but the other men involved in the heist have never been identified. He was released from prison in 2000, and On Sunday 4 December, just eight days after the robbery, Black was questioned by police and under questioning he identified three men – Micky McAvoy (played by Adam Nagaitis), Tony White and Brian Robinson (Frankie Wilson). There was only one problem – what could the six robbers do with all that gold bullion, with the police, customs and just about everyone else on the lookout for it? The robbers stormed into the staff room of the depot and made the security guards lay down on the floor.

However, in 1986, Noye was found guilty of conspiracy to handle the Brink's-Mat gold, fined £500,000, plus £200,000 costs, and sentenced to 14 years in prison. It's said that Noye melted down the bullions and mixed them with copper coins to dilute the purity of the gold, but also to make it less traceable, as the police were desperately trying to locate the gold, and the people making a fortune from it. In 1992, four people who helped launder the gold – an estimated £14 million – were jailed for five to ten years, including Gordon Parry, Brian Perry, Patrick Clark and Jean Savage. Brian Reader, Michael Relton and Kathleen MacAvoy also were convicted of laundering proceeds or handling stolen goods. Antony Black eventually cracked and told police of his involvement, and of his brother-in-law, Brian Robinson. The men tied up two other security guards, and threatened to douse them in petrol unless they used their codes to open up the vault. One of these was Kenneth Noye (Lowden) who was brought in by MacAvoy’s associates, Brian Perry and George Francis, to help with his stash. At 6.40am on 26 November, 1983, six men, including Micky MacAvoy and Brian Robinson, broke into the Brink’s-Mat warehouse, specifically Unit 7 of the Heathrow International Trading Estate. It’s so far reaching, they had to whittle it down to this so there’ll inevitably be things that have been left out and Neil has also got to make it entertaining”. The burglars had no idea what to do with the gold, so they called in some criminal acquaintances to help turn it into cash.
The 1983 Brink's-Mat robbery was the largest score in British history – and now it's been turned into a hugely entertaining BBC series.
The Gold is also partially redeemed by a finale that manages to cleverly wrap up loose narrative ends, while acknowledging that the full story is yet to be told – and likely never can be. The real story of Brink’s-Mat and its 30-year aftermath is so bloody and bullet-ridden it purportedly has its own curse, with at least six associated deaths to date. Bonneville’s DCI Boyce is a particular offender in this regard, contributing to the false impression that he’s a holdover from the Dixon of Dock Green era of twee TV coppers, and not a real person at all. (In fact, the real Boyce had a distinguished career of standing up to police corruption in and around south London, including [Great Train Robbery](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2014/sep/28/the-great-train-robbery-in-pictures), the Hatton Garden heist) and storied quests (usually to the Costa del Crime and back again). At the time, it was the largest score in British history.
The BBC's dramatisation of the Brink's-Mat heist is slow to get going, but it brilliantly evokes the era of Ford Capris and mandatory office-based sexism.
He’s fantastic – as is the way the show conjures the glamour and the grime of the 1980s. The hope must be that in the weeks ahead Forsyth’s meandering script picks up the pace and that The Gold becomes as gripping as it is atmospheric. He’s a solicitor who gets bent coppers back on the beat and lives on the dime of his megabucks father-in-law. As the milieu is 1980s London, there must also be a yuppie forged entirely from ambition and bits of Filofax. [Terry from Minder](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYwuZO6c32g) and speak in a cockney patois somewhere between [Arthur Daley](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYwuZO6c32g) and [Del Boy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63rcdLeXiU8). Desperate to become a man of means in his own right, he’s amenable to helping Noye launder his contraband bullion through Swiss bank accounts and shell companies. [Age of Consent](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZXxmhok1AU) by New Order on full volume. Their nemesis – though neither party yet knows it – is Kenny Noye (Jack Lowden), a fence whom the robbers task with repurposing their millions. Where The Gold shines is in its evocation of early-1980s Britain, a setting that will resonate with Irish viewers. Noye is a new man for the new decade. The Gold (BBC One, Sunday, 9pm) is about as subtle as daylight robbery. The default colour scheme is nicotine-stain yellow.
BBC One drama The Gold stars Hugh Bonneville and Jack Lowden - but is it based on a true story?
It was fascinating and a real privilege to meet the real man." And I think Neil's really wrung all the juice out of the conversations that he had had in research because it's all there in the script. [subscribe now](http://radiotimes.com/magazine-subscription?utm_term=evergreen-article). One of these is Charlotte Spencer's police officer character Nicki Jennings, who has been based on three women that were involved in the case. I think the Sweeney were delighted that he was off their case. So it was a very tight unit. "And even in this first episode, his discipline in terms of when he took over the flying squad, which he did briefly, the image of the Sweeney all hanging out in pubs and smoking, he was like ‘right, we're going for runs every lunchtime’. Speaking at a recent Q&A for the series, Forsyth was asked why he is so drawn to this story. So you still feel you're creating something." If you're working off real events, you can still create a television show and you're not gonna get letters from people saying the character’s driving the wrong car. Instead, they happen upon £26 million in gold bullion. [The Gold](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-gold-bbc-release-date/) has arrived to liven up [Sunday nights](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-gold-release-date-confirmed-newsupdate/) following the end of [Happy Valley](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/happy-valley-season-4-explanation/), and is set to tell the story of a major robbery with extensive repercussions.
This retelling of the Brink's-Mat robbery and its aftermath is stylish, well-told and superbly acted – but papers over the darker truths.
Noye’s trial for stabbing an undercover police officer to death is covered here (he was acquitted after claiming he acted in self defence) and it is noted that he knifed his victim in the back five times; crucially, though, the stabbing is not shown on screen, and we barely know the officer involved, which lessens its impact. We see Palmer beginning to build a timeshare business, but are not told that he went on to be jailed for the biggest timeshare fraud in history, and was eventually shot dead. Yet here, while never exactly likeable, there is a suggestion that the audience should be rooting for him as he assembles a team to turn the gold into cash and get one over on the Establishment. The criminal at the heart of this enterprise is Kenneth Noye (Lowden), who fenced the gold and is a working-class boy made – well, not good, but rich. The first episode in particular sets off with a narrative confidence – although it begins to drag around episode four – and the acting across the board is high quality. The 1983 robbery itself, in which six men broke into a depot near Heathrow expecting to steal £1 million in foreign currency but instead finding £26 million in gold bullion, is dealt with in the first five minutes.

Alto Metals (ASX: AME) has hit high-grade gold mineralisation during its maiden drilling campaign at the historic Oroya mine in Western Australia.
Alto’s planned follow-up exploration activities include further step-out and down-dip drilling to test the extension of existing mineralisation, in addition to closer spaced drilling to validate historical results for geological modelling. The high-grade hits both above and below the historical workings, and along strike, confirm the mineralisation extends north-west of the open pit, and down-dip to the west of the Main Reef. High-grade mineralisation also remains at the main Sandstone and Juno reefs, and the company believes there is potential to extend the strike extension of Oroya South mineralisation.

In real terms, the heist remains the largest in history and its reverberations are still being felt 40 years later.
