Thousands take part in anti-government protests in Albania (Irish Examiner)

Thousands of opposition supporters took part in a protest calling for Albania's prime minister to resign over corruption allegations.

The opposition also accuses Mr Rama of corrupting Charles McGonigal, a former high-ranking FBI counterintelligence official. Sali Berisha, a former president and prime minister of Albania who leads the centre-right Democratic Party, and former president Ilir Meta, who leads the left-wing Freedom Party, were among the protesters who gathered in front of the main government building. Protesters hurled smoke bombs at the main entrance of the government building, where hundreds of police officers formed a line to protect the building in Tirana.

Thousands demonstrated in Tirana on Saturday calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama over corruption claims and blaming him for rising.

Rama rubbished the accusations as “extreme defamations,” and claimed the investigation against the former FBI agent “has nothing to do” with him or the Albanian government. “Edi Rama committed a hostile act corrupting a former FBI official in order to eliminate the opposition,” right-wing opposition leader and former Prime Minister Sali Berisha told the crowd as they chanted “Rama, go away.” The opposition, which staged the rally, also accused Rama of having “secret links” with a former FBI executive who they believe influenced the US State Department to sanction one of the prime minister’s political rivals.
