THE 2023 League of Ireland season gets going this evening with the traditional curtain raiser of the President's Cup.League champions Shamrock Rovers.

Duffy followed up sharply but sent his strike into the side netting otherwise the match would’ve been surely out of sight for the league champions. It was Derry who threatened first, however, four minutes into the second half and Patching’s curling strike from the edge of the box struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced out. The opening goal arrived on 23 minutes when Doherty found Duffy on the left wing and the winger did brilliantly to pick out Patching 10 yards from goal who smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Derry City won the President's Cup for the first time as they defeated Shamrock Rovers at the Brandywell.

The lead was doubled just six minutes before half-time and it was a moment to forget for Rovers goalkeeper Leon Pohls. Patching opened the scoring after 23 minutes as Derry City took the lead at the end of a flowing move down the left wing. It looked straightforward all the way for Pohls, but the ball somehow slipped through his arms and into the net much to the delight of the home fans.

DERRY CITY and Shamrock Rovers will not be Pohls apart at the end of the season - but they were on Friday night as the Candystripes lifted the Preside.

This was the phoney war for both. Both on and off the pitch, it felt like pre-season with the crowd not as loud as they will be for the league meetings, and poor first touches not as quick to be punished either. But Patching then struck the underside of the bar at the other end of a half that largely petered out. The visitors then had their best spell as Johnny Kenny looked threatening though the closest they came to an equaliser was a Richie Towell effort that grazed the top of the bar. DERRY CITY and Shamrock Rovers will not be Pohls apart at the end of the season - but they were on Friday night as the Candystripes lifted the President’s Cup. Shamrock Rovers’ kept plenty of their big guns in reserve before the 36-game marathon begins next week as they look to equal the record four titles in a row.
