Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry struggle after frost-hit start in Phoenix (Independent.ie)

After a frost-delayed start, Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry never warmed up in the desert and struggled in the opening round of the $20 million WM Phoenix ...

Gary Hurley was 29th after a 69 while John Murphy eagled the 18th to salvage a two-over 74. It was an even tougher day for Lowry as the Offaly star made just one birdie – at the par-five 15th – and dropped five shots, three-putting the 17th before failing to get up and down for par at the last. He almost went out of bounds at the second but recovered brilliantly, hitting a 125-yard recovery from the foot of a metal fence to 44 feet, to set up a par before dropping another shot at the short seventh for his first over-par opening round for 208 days.

In his first round since the departure of his caddie Bo Martin, the Offaly man bogeyed the 4th, 9th, and 11th to sit at three-over. However, consecutive bogeys on the 18th and 1st (his 10th) pushed him down the leaderboard. McIlroy, starting on the 10th, bogeyed the 1tth before birdies on 15 and 17 got him under par for the day.

Rory McIlroy battles his game with opening 73 as weather fails to ... (The Irish Times)

Shane Lowry struggles to opening 74 as frost and wind make for late start and tough conditions.

On the 18th, McIlroy’s drive was pushed into the right rough and his approach came up short of the green from where he pitched to 14 feet but failed to make the par save. The freshly-bearded Charley Hoffman, playing on a sponsor’s exemption after missing last year’s tournament due to injury, brought new impetus to his play. He did manage to get back to parity with a birdie on the par-five 15th and then drove to the right of the short 337 yards par-four 17th and pitched to four feet to dip under par. The Offaly man – starting his player-caddie partnership with veteran bagman Darren Reynolds – struggled and was three over par on his card through 11 holes (after bogeys on the fourth, ninth and 11th) but managed his first birdie of the round on the par-five 15th. However, Lowry’s tee shot on the drivable 17th found a bunker and he ran up a bogey five. A pulled drive down the left of the par-four 11th found the water hazard and led to an early bogey.

Rory McIlroy hit only four of 14 fairways en route to shooting his first over-par opening round since the Masters.

So I got over it, I was like, 'OK, I needed to take it a little bit more on the inside than I usually would and sort of just toe it in a little bit,'” he said. On one such occasion, McIlroy’s tee shot at the par-4 second, his 11th hole, went well right and nearly out of bounds. “I felt like I hit it OK. 1, McIlroy has won each of his last two PGA Tour starts, dating back to the season-ending Tour Championship and October’s CJ Cup. McIlroy, who began his day on the par-4 10th, made four bogeys and two birdies for a 2-over 73 – his first opening round over par since the Masters. “But it's a challenge, and again, I'm trying to embrace that challenge.”

This Rory McIlroy shot? He faced just a fence, a tower, shrubs, trees ... (Golf.com)

Rory McIlroy, during the WM Phoenix Open first round, faced just a fence, a tower, shrubs, trees and fans. “How is that even possible?”

“Actually the way I was walking up to my ball, it looked like I didn’t have a backswing, but I didn’t realize the angle, like how far right the green actually was,” McIlroy said. In his role, he is responsible for editing, writing and developing stories across the golf space. “Yeah, I felt like I hit it OK,” McIlroy said. “That is insane how good that shot is.” His tee shot went right, over the rough and over the gallery, and just short of nearby housing and out of bounds; he was about a foot and a half to the left of a boundary fence. At one point, McIlroy settled in for the shot, only to get spooked and step back; one of the shrub’s branches had touched his iron. Is that the second green? Among all of that was a line to the hole, about 125 yards away. Or the tower? Doesn’t hurt to ask the question. A PGA Tour ShotLink tower was about 40 yards ahead and to his left. He’d won without his best stuff, he said, and that’s “rarer than I’d like it to be.”

Rory McIlroy insisted it was "just one of those days" after opening with a two-over 73 that left him seven shots off the lead in the WM Phoenix Open.

"It was the only way to stop it on that green." "It was hard," said the world number one, who was tied 82nd at the close of play, seven shots behind Canadian duo Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin. Xander Schauffele opened with a 67. "Tricky day. "I actually felt the best swing I made of the day was the par-3, 7th, and hit it 20 yards over the green. "I sort of got lucky because the wind was hard off the left, and I needed to hit that hard draw against the wind," McIlroy said.

Rory McIlroy off to slow start at WM Phoenix Open (pgatour.com)

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Rory McIlroy didn't mince words at his pre-tournament press conference at the WM Phoenix Open earlier this week.

This week’s field features 18 of the top 20 players in the world, the first time a non-major, non-PLAYERS Championship, non-FedExCup Playoffs event, and non-WGC has had that many since the 2007 Wells Fargo Championship. “I actually felt the best swing I made of the day was the par-3, 7th,” he continued, “and hit it 20 yards over the green. “I struggle off the tee here. Hopefully the wind keeps up this afternoon for the guys out there, and we'll get back at it tomorrow.” And yet the golf ball does not care about all of that; with every shot, every round, a player must prove himself anew. They were all chasing early leaders Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin (66), both of Canada.
