Kendrick Lamar just took home two Grammys for “The Heart Part 5,” winning for rap song and rap performance. Future’s “Wait for U,” which features Drake and Tems, just won for melodic rap performance. Its lead single, “Bad Habit,” ascended to the top of the Billboard 100, marking the native Angeleno’s first No. Bonnie Raitt’s “Made Up Mind” just won for Americana performance, while her song “Just Like That” won for American roots. That would be “cabrón,” which is a slang term that roughly translates to “badass.” He then regaled the crowd — and even got Taylor Swift out of her seat to dance! Grammys 2023: Harry Styles and Bad Bunny to perform while ... (The Guardian)

Beyoncé leads with nine nominations for her album Renaissance, tying her for most all-time nominations with her husband, Jay Z – but will she show up?

A controversial pre-telecast award: Dave Chappelle wins best comedy album for his special The Closer, which drew criticism for being transphobic. “It has just been such a journey,” she said in accepting the award. Bad Bunny has kicked off the show with a rousing Spanish-language performance that has brought dozens of dancers to the stage, cast in red and orange lighting. Styles described making Harry’s House with two of his best friends as “the greatest experience of my life” and playing it for people “the greatest joy I could’ve asked for.” More interesting: the camera cut to Taylor Swift for a reaction shot, which feels rude. Another new bit for this year: a fan focus group for the album of the year award. “Beyoncé is on her way,” Noah reassures when she does not take the stage to accept her 31st Grammy award, tying the record for all-time wins.

Beyoncé became the most decorated artist in Grammys history, taking home the 32nd award of her career and breaking the conductor Georg Solti's 1997 record.

Instead, The-Dream collected her best R&B song trophy on her behalf as one of the eight writers credited on the track, telling the audience, “Beyoncé thanks y’all.” And during the afternoon pre-show, she won as well for best dance/electronic recording for “Break My Soul” and best traditional R&B performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa.”

Instead, the night’s most prestigious trophy went to pop star Harry Styles for his album “Harry’s House.” Styles appeared surprised as he arrived onstage, and the censors quickly jumped into action as he uttered a few shocked expletives.

The Highs, Lows, and Whoas of the 2023 Grammy Awards (Vulture)

The 2023 Grammys featured performances by Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, and Lizzo, along with tributes to hip-hop and Smokey Robinson.

Clearly, that wasn’t even enough, after Beyoncé was snubbed in the category for a fourth time for [her earth-shaking seventh album Renaissance](https://www.vulture.com/2022/08/beyonce-renaissance-review.html). Lizzo brought a whole choir for her performance of “About Damn Time” and “Special,” with some church-worthy belting; Luke Combs showed off the vocals that got him out of his bar bouncer gig; and Mary J. The speech that followed was a rare moment of vulnerability from Bey, who, on the verge of tears, thanked her late Uncle Johnny and the queer community for paving the way for her dance history tribute Renaissance. [Vulture’s Rembert Browne wrote](https://www.vulture.com/2017/02/what-more-does-beyonc-have-to-do-to-win-album-of-the-year.html) she would “have to make an album of the decade” to win the top honor. The Grammys gave fans a bit of a warning by announcing that Quavo would be one of the In Memoriam performers, honoring his late nephew and collaborator Takeoff. Beyoncé wasn’t even there to see herself tie the record for most Grammy wins of all time because she was stuck in a limo on her way to Crypto.com Arena. (That said, [Petras gave a touching tribute to her late trans collaborator SOPHIE](https://www.vulture.com/2023/02/sam-smith-kim-petras-grammys-win-history.html), while also managing to shout out her gay mother Madonna and her actual mother.) Not that it mattered — the tribute in honor of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary was an exciting, whiplash-inducing trip through rap history, featuring the most legends you could crowd on stage in 10 minutes. [Brandi Carlile](https://www.vulture.com/2021/04/interview-brandi-carlile-memoir-broken-horses.html) found a new way to break Grammys ground this year, netting awards for Best Rock Performance and Song. Younger acts like Billie Eilish, Lizzo, and Olivia Rodrigo have been some of the biggest Grammys players in recent years, so it’s great to see the Academy carrying on that investment to the next generation. In his third year of hosting, and first away from The Daily Show, Trevor Noah seemed more comfortable than ever at the Grammys. That happened tonight, when Benito kicked things off by snaking through the audience to an equally crowded stage, with dozens of dancers and a full backing band.

Beyoncé won a record-breaking 32nd Grammy Award, while Harry Styles won album of the year.

Accepting the album award, he thanked his family “for giving me the courage and giving me the vulnerability to share my truth and share these stories.” It was won by Tobias Jesso Jr., who has written songs for Adele, Styles and others. The prize was chosen by what the academy described as a “blue-ribbon committee.” Harry’s House also won Styles the award for pop vocal album. Raitt (73), was the surprise winner of song of the year – beating Adele, Beyoncé, Swift, Lizzo and Styles, whose songs were huge hits – for Just Like That, a tender meditation about an organ donation that had only modest commercial success. The power of stardom was another of the night’s big underlying themes. “I hope that there’s a future where gender and identity and all these labels don’t matter that much,” Petras told reporters backstage. Gender freedom was a theme running through the night. She had been the most nominated artist of the evening, with nine nods. “You clearly are the artist of our lives!” she shouted. (Even so, Beyoncé faced a backlash recently when she performed a private concert in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where homosexuality is illegal.) But she was once again shut out of the big categories, winning all four of her prizes for the night in down-ballot genre categories.

Grammys 2023: Harry Styles wins album of the year, Samara Joy ... (Redlands Daily Facts)

The Grammys this year picked a group of fans to discuss why their favorite artist deserved to win Grammys, and before this final award of the night was handed ...

All of you are so inspiring to me.” So to be with you, born and raised in the Bronx, New York, my family here. “I listen to everyone in this category when I’m alone.

Grammys 2023: the best and worst outfits from the red carpet (The Irish Times)

Harry Styles showed up bare-chested, Mary J. Blige exposed her hips, while Lizzo, Sam Smith and Taylor Swift turned heads with stunning colours.

Continuing the monochrome theme that spontaneously took over the red carpet, Fat Joe wore a custom hot pink suit from 5001 Flavors, a boutique in Harlem. “Cleopatra meets Goldfinger 2023” is how Laverne Cox described the sleeveless reptile skin dress by Kim Kassas that she wore while interviewing guests on the red carpet. The orange Dolce & Gabbana cape that covered the singer’s head in flowers was both maximal and elegant. The singer’s unhinged Harris Reed pantsuit might have been the most unforgettable look of the night. Blige bared her hips, and singer Gayle wore a dress that revealed a lot more, including the stars covering her nipples. Roughly one hour after celebrities started arriving on the Grammys’ red carpet, the Styles reporter and critic Guy Trebay had an observation.

Grammys 2023: If someone had to pip Beyoncé, you could do worse ... (The Guardian)

The queen of pop broke records – though not for the big gongs, again. But if the Recording Academy has a history of unexpected choices, this year's wins for ...

[Harry Styles](https://www.theguardian.com/music/harry-styles)’s Harry’s House beating Renaissance to album of the year doesn’t feel the same as Beck’s Morning Phase triumphing over [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/dec/13/beyonce-album-first-review) in 2015, nor does it feel the same as if, say, Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres had won this year. [Beyoncé](https://www.theguardian.com/music/beyonce) has only ever won one of them once – song of the year in 2010 for Single Ladies – which seems a fairly inexplicable state of affairs: you don’t need to be a rabid member of the Bey Hive to know that she’s had an immense cultural and commercial impact over the last 20 years. Under the circumstances, Samara Joy – a hugely gifted jazz vocalist, gradually emerging as a significant songwriter as well as an adept interpreter of standards – feels like a worthwhile choice: rooted in tradition, but too soulful to qualify as easy listening. The weirdest success was Bonnie Raitt’s [Just Like That](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skd0XR3twCA) winning song of the year, at least from the perspective of the UK, where the album it’s from didn’t even make the charts. Certainly they’re one of the biggest-selling groups in a field where several of the nominees didn’t even seem particularly new: Molly Tuttle’s first album came out in 2006; Tobe Nwigwe’s first EP six years ago; Muni Long is 34 and released her debut album, albeit under her real name, Priscilla Renea, in 2009. Without wishing to cast shade on those doughtily toiling away in the areas covered by the best score soundtrack for video games and other interactive media and best new age ambient or chant album categories, the Grammys are ultimately about four awards: album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

Best and Worst Moments From the 2023 Grammys (The New York Times)

But her four victories didn't come in the major, all-genre categories — album, record and song of the year. (Those went to Harry Styles, Lizzo and Bonnie Raitt.) ...

[Bonnie Raitt](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/31/arts/music/bonnie-raitt-grammys-just-like-that.html), who had just joined a memorial for Christine McVie singing “Songbird,” was surprised when the Grammys chose “Just Like That” as song of the year. By the time she did step to the microphone for a proper [acceptance speech](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/05/arts/music/beyonce-grammys-win-record.html), having taken the all-time Grammy record and also opted not to perform, Beyoncé had made her priorities clear: She [posted to Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/CoTgYsmLl7G/) about her Grammy wins before actually showing her face at the Grammys. She is one of the mature singers and songwriters who have been relegated to formats like “Americana” and “Legacy.” But Raitt had learned from the best — notably John Prine — how to tell a sad but uplifting story with a voice and a small band. They shared a Temptations hit co-written by Robinson, “The Way You Do the Things You Do.” Robinson himself joined Wonder for a song they wrote together (along with Hank Cosby), “The Tears of a Clown”; then Wonder performed his own “Higher Ground” with the country hitmaker Chris Stapleton, and the music finally took off. [Beyoncé broke the record](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/06/arts/music/grammy-awards-beyonce-harry-styles.html) for most wins in the event’s history. [a rough draft of a hip-hop chronology](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/05/arts/music/grammys-hip-hop-50th-anniversary-performance.html) that was a cavalcade of dozens of performers onstage, most spitting a memorable line or verse, and a few — like a forthright Queen Latifah and a speed-tongued Busta Rhymes — getting more valuable seconds to show off. His performance — a medley of “El Apagón” (“The Blackout”), a tribute to Puerto Rican culture amid adversity, and “Después de la Playa” (“After the Beach”), a come-on — was a carnival and a dance party. ( [The-Dream](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/03/arts/music/the-dream-muni-long-grammys.html), one of her fellow writers, spent a few seconds onstage instead.) And when Noah, after blaming Los Angeles traffic, eventually did find Beyoncé at her table, bringing her the trophy she had won, the singer just nodded politely, giving him — and the show that would go on to both celebrate and disrespect her, again — basically nothing. Stan service gone wild was on full display during the misleading — and often humiliating — interstitial segments that showed (alleged) superfans of the 10 artists nominated for album of the year spouting P.R. [“Un Verano Sin Ti,”](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/06/arts/music/bad-bunny-un-verano-sin-ti.html) the year’s most streamed album and a Billboard No.
