On the field, wantaway winger Anthony Gordon arrived at the club’s Finch Farm training complex today, having been absent from training for the last three days as he tries to push through a move to Newcastle. Dyche, sacked by the Clarets last April before the club failed to stay in the Premier League, was always on a shortlist drawn up by Everton after Lampard was sacked on Monday and it is understood he now looks to be appointed within the next 24 hours. The relegation-threatened Premier League club’s preferred option of ex-Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa flew into London for talks on Thursday but reports suggest he has turned down the opportunity, having previously expressed concern about the suitability of the squad for his methods.

However, Dyche’s tenure would come to a sudden end in April of last year, as he was sacked with Burnley sitting in the relegation zone. He would then manage Burnley in the Premier League for five consecutive full seasons, with the highlight being a seventh-place finish in 2017/18 and European qualification for the first time since 1966. Dyche took over at Burnley in October of that year, and went on to lead them to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League in 2014.

The 67-year-old remained unconvinced about going to Everton at this stage, however, and negotiations are understood to be over. Bielsa was the first choice of Everton’s owner, Farhad Moshiri, and flew to London on Thursday to hold further talks with club officials. That raised their hopes of enticing the Argentinian to Goodison Park, despite his reservations over the state of the club and the squad and his record of never taking over a European club mid-season.

With Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski in the ranks, there’s a couple of players to get the lookeylikey game in the dressing room. “We have to be prepared for pretty much everything, the 31st is deadline day and we will see.” That would have left Everton needing an interim manager for the precarious task of keeping them in the Premier League and was not a situation the club was willing to accept. The word from Merseyside on Bielsa is that he wanted to come in and work with the club’s Under-21 team for the rest of the season until taking over the seniors next season. Jamie Jackson is up for the Cup, and Preston take on Tottenham in a historic tie in Saturday’s Dad’s Army slot. We will see the day after the transfer window the reality of the squad but, because of the man and because of his career, we must respect him and we must listen to him.” He’s back in team training and now we have to see when he’s ready to go back into the games. “English football now has the opportunity to make the changes required to fix the imbalance – the money is in the game, but a redistribution solution is not.” He is training with the team and we will see. I spoke to [Caicedo] on Wednesday and told him my opinion, it is difficult to change teams in the season. All he needs right now is a club where he can be sure he’ll be welcomed and revered, respected by the board and loved by the fans, a club with passion, history, and a future. I understand when a player has a possibility to change team and go to a big team [it is hard to resist].

The managerial shortlist of the pragmatic Dyche versus the high-tempo Marcelo Bielsa was further evidence the club has no clear plan.

Bielsa’s reservations over the state of the club and the suitability of the squad to his methods are well-founded. Everton’s riposte will be the strategic review, the board’s answer to the criticism they attracted last season and which has resulted in 26 appointments behind the scenes by Thelwell. The boyhood Evertonian missed three days of training this week in an attempt to force through his £40m move to St James’ Park. That is not to disparage the anticipated arrival of Dyche. From high-tempo, attacking, possession-based football under the Argentinian to the more direct, defensively sound and pragmatic approach of the former Burnley manager inside 24 hours. The club can only pray that the next manager’s roadmap for Premier League survival brings more clarity and success than their own.

Sean Dyche Could Be Perfect Manager For Everton In Midst Of ... (Forbes)

Marcelo Bielsa was Everton's first-choice to replace Frank Lampard as manager, but Sean Dyche is now expected to be appointed at Goodison Park.

James Tarkowski is another Everton player who has worked under Dyche before and he could become a defensive leader for the Toffees under new management. Everton’s midfield unit might be lacking somewhat in creativity, but the trio of Andre Onana, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Alex Iwobi will give Dyche a lot to mould. Dyche will have wide men to work with as Everton manager in the form of Dwight McNeil (who he used to coach at Burnley) and Demarai Gray. The midfield was also deployed to win second balls and ensure a level of protection in front of a physical and naturally aggressive defensive line. This might not be what some fans want to hear, but Dyche is as good a fit for Everton’s current squad as any other manager out there. According to reports, the Argentine wanted to take over the Toffees’ Under-21s team until the end of the season when he would move into the job of senior team manager.

The biggest existential threat to Everton comes from its owners (Irish Examiner)

This may be beneficial in the short term in curbing some of the poorer practices demonstrated at board level in recent years, but it doesn’t alone solve the existential threats to the club’s future. Because of the large scale and entirely peaceful demonstration of fans (a sit-in after the game attended by several thousand on a very cold evening) organised by the umbrella group NSNOW under the #AllTogetherNow banner. There is no evidence of that either in the current structure, the planning, nor the current results. Yet with the ongoing recruitment of a new manager, all talks are with Farhad Moshiri, the director of football seemingly completely out of the decision-making process. They will point out (with some justification) that the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the consequential removal of USM as main sponsor (worth £20 million a year) and significant contributor (£150 million plus) to the capital costs of building a £760 million stadium. Yet also a club that is ever present in the Premier League, amassing huge broadcasting revenues, and with a shareholder, who according to the accounts has committed close to £700 million on both the football club and the building of the Everton Stadium on the banks of the River Mersey.

Sean Dyche has four issues he needs to address immediately at ... (Liverpool Echo)

Sean Dyche will have plenty to do when his appointment as Everton manager is confirmed, but what issues does he need to address immediately.

[Vitalii Mykolenko](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/vitalii-mykolenko) and [Nathan Patterson](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/nathan-patterson)) with the former brought in as a replacement for [Lucas Digne](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/lucas-digne) who had fallen out with [Rafael Benitez](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/rafa-benitez) only for the Spaniard to be sacked as manager less than a week later, the Blues have played – and lost – their four fixtures this month without the help of any fresh faces. As the then-Clarets boss himself said last April though when his side came back from 2-1 down to beat Everton 3-2, these Blues players “don’t know how to win” and that’s arguably the biggest issue he has to address first. Leicester City and Atletico Madrid have both overcome rivals with greater resources to secure domestic titles in recent seasons playing that way and now Dyche must decide whether it’s the way he wants to go with Everton, who have largely switched between 3-4-3, 4-3-3 and 5-3-2 so far this term. You suspect a no-nonsense customer like Dyche wouldn’t put up with such antics but even if Gordon is sold to the Magpies and Everton suddenly have a lot more cash at their disposal, would the new manager even have enough time to spend it, so it’s a huge call for the former Burnley gaffer to make. After that, the rest of February brings a couple of huge home matches against Leeds United and Aston Villa. Everton lost eight of their last nine games under Lampard, a sequence that was only punctuated by an unlikely 1-1 draw at reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on New Year’s Eve. [Everton](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/everton-fc) always intended on bringing in two additional attacking options in the January transfer window but with the deadline looming on Tuesday, they still haven’t signed anyone. Speaking in his recent interview with Jazz Bal, the club’s Fan Advisory Board chair, Everton owner [Farhad Moshiri](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/farhad-moshiri) said: “We need a striker… [Dyche](https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/all-about/sean-dyche) must now decide whether he’s happy to go along with prioritising this area or whether other positions should be bolstered. THERE was only ever one man who could save Everton from their prolonged crisis and I'm convinced that man is Sean Dyche. Now the former Burnley boss.

Some say they need relegation to refresh and reset the club but I’m not having that. They need a back-up to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, a player I’m convinced Dyche will work wonders for, and they need someone to anchor the midfield. He will get the team fit and focused, he will give them a clear identity and he will connect with the fanbase. You can’t blame the players for that — it was the club who offered them big money — but that is not a healthy situation. So, yes, I owe him a huge debt of gratitude but it is not just for the influence he had on my career which makes me believe Dyche is the right man for Everton — it’s his all-round managerial abilities. But he continued to ring me and message me regularly as my career progressed, telling me I deserved my successes. But while I was inside, Dyche visited me and wrote to me. The season I spent under him was my breakthrough campaign, as I played regularly as a striker and scored 11 Championship goals. Dyche was my assistant manager, and then my manager, when I was at Watford. When he was No 2 to Malky Mackay I didn’t like him and I didn’t think he liked me. Everton need a boss for the long term and have found one. I didn’t like Sean Dyche at first but he was the making of me..
