Could domestic violence explain the Monterey Park mass shooting? (Los Angeles Times)

Domestic violence and mass shootings are intimately linked. But Asian Americans face barriers to confronting abuse.

“Your ‘no’ [as a mother] is the start of everything,” Pusey said. “I would encourage folks who are in an unhealthy relationship and have a gun in the home to call and make a safety plan,” she said. “We want to go upstream and prevent these things from happening.” “They don’t want the stigma of coming from a broken family, so they try to stay in a relationship that really hurts them.” “Now women know that verbal and mental [abuse] is also domestic violence,” she said. California is one of 19 states where a judge can issue a “gun violence restraining order” to temporarily take firearms from an alleged abuser, Lui and her colleagues don’t know what happens to their clients after they leave the 52-week court-ordered program. Survivors and perpetrators say, “this is my family issue,” said the psychologist, who runs a court-mandated intervention program for abusers, one of the few Chinese-language options in the state. But if they’re in middle school, high school, preparing to go to college, it’s harder.” To be sure, “Asian” is a broad umbrella encompassing many distinct ethnic groups, faith traditions, languages and cultures. “They don’t want physical violence, but having to leave or having him jailed or deported does not make their lives better. “I want to know why, I know our City Council and elected officials want to know why.

A lot of people travel far away to Monterey Park to eat and dine.” “It was the first ‘ethnoburb’ in Southern California for Asians,” Hsieh said. But, they remained in their ethnic enclaves and mingled among themselves, which means they have limited spaces to gather as they age.” Some dedicated dancers who came to the ballroom showed up after work and on the weekends. Hsieh, the professor, grew up in Santa Clarita, but has deep connections to Monterey Park. Monterey Park’s transformation to a predominantly Asian city was the brainchild of Fred Hsieh, a Chinese immigrant who was also a savvy real estate developer. For decades, the city has been revered as the flagship location in Southern California for authentic Asian food, particularly Chinese cuisine from various regions. In Chinese culture, the number eight is seen by some as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. That sense of peace was shattered after a gunman killed 11 people in their 50s, 60s and 70s and wounded nine others last Saturday during a Lunar New Year celebration at the Star Dance Ballroom. When Hiseh died in 1999, Monterey Park had at the time become the only U.S. And residents in their golden years enjoy karaoke, the Chinese tile game mah jong and — as the outside world learned last week after a horrific mass shooting — ballroom dancing. Signs across the vibrant suburb are written in English and Chinese.

California mass shootings: Asian Americans grapple with back-to ... (Vox)

In Half Moon Bay — a beach town south of San Francisco — a 66-year-old Asian American man killed 7 people, including Chinese and Latino farm workers on Monday.

Members of both the Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay communities are responding with mutual aid and financial support for the victims and their families. Beyond the help that’s focused on victims, experts and organizers are also urging stricter gun laws, more mental health resources for aging people, and greater scrutiny of domestic violence within the Asian American community. Historically, Monterey Park has been a “vibrant Asian American enclave,” says Kulkarni, and “one of the first suburbs in the United States to have an Asian majority,” according to Zarsadiaz. Farm workers have long faced [challenging working conditions](https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/living-in-shipping-containers-making-9-an-17742337.php) in the state, including low wages, overcrowded housing, and workplace exploitation. The violence in a historically safe space for Asian Americans has inspired both immense grief and solidarity. Since the 1970s, Monterey Park has established itself as a “suburban Chinatown” and become a central, middle-class hub of Asian American restaurants, strip malls, and gathering places. Given the limited information on the motives of these attacks, many in the Asian American community are still trying to wrap their heads around both the causes behind them, and some of the similarities between the shooters. These shootings follow anti-Asian attacks that surged in recent years as Asian Americans were scapegoated for the spread of the coronavirus.

Tucson's memorial 'Embrace' reckons with Giffords mass shooting (Los Angeles Times)

As mass shootings rise, with two in California in the last week alone, so do memorials that mark their memory — including a thoughtful new one in Tucson.

Afterward, the names of the dead were recited, each accompanied by the ding of a bell. The shooting took place on a brilliant, sunny morning — much like the morning of the anniversary. Earlier this month, a group of survivors and their families — about two dozen people — gathered within one of the berms to mark the anniversary. At 10:10 a.m., the time of the shooting, the assembled group observed a moment of silence. “It allowed us to develop a layer of messaging that was about the context as opposed to just talking about a small moment in time.” In the George Floyd moment, artists and designers are changing the nature of monuments and the histories they honor. Yet, by the end of the day Diaz and her mother, Isis Calderon, were left traumatised and fearing for their lives after a shocking shooting outside the service ...

In the eulogy, I wrote just like her name, she was sweet like a flower.” That was how Diaz and Calderon wanted people to remember them. Diaz says that Fresia dreamed of regenerating the cacao farm her family owned in Colombia where she hoped to grow fruits. I was looking forward to having the people that supported their journey, their friends and family to really be together for once in their name.” “Sara had a special relationship with the staff members there,” Diaz said. She says that as a Colombian, she had already faced micro-aggressions, but now these have been compounded by the claims in the media. Diaz and Calderon were keen to emphasise that Sara did not have a relationship with her father. When Sara was awake at nine, she was back in the hospital,” Calderon says, speaking from her flat in London. A lot of people were helping her, helping us, to pick up her son from school, or take some food for them to eat in the hospital.” But when her aunt and cousin died within a month of each other, she was desperate to put together a memorial service in honour of the people they were. One of the women, aged 48, has “potentially life-changing injuries”, and remains in hospital, the Metropolitan police said. She paid close attention to every detail, from the music they chose to the poems that were read out.

A [weekend shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park](https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/01/23/monterey-park-shooting-what-happened/?itid=lb_more-on-the-california-shootings_2) left 11 people dead, and seven people were killed in related shootings at two locations around Half Moon Bay. In 2017, a homeless man and registered sex offender was found guilty of felony reckless burning in a fire that damaged several greenhouses on the farm. “Everybody was pretty raw and you could see the fear in people’s eyes,” King said of his interactions with survivors Wednesday. Jimenez, the vice mayor, said he knew a lot about the farm from his work with the nonprofit ALAS, whose full title in Spanish means Helping Latinos to Dream. One worker said he had spent two years at the farm and it was his first job in the United States after migrating from Guatemala. “We’re the most expensive place in the country to live and these are the most vulnerable of the vulnerable; they’re hit harder than anyone else.” Researchers at the UC Merced Community and Labor Center who surveyed more than 1,300 farmworkers found that the median wage for California farmworkers is $21,915 a year and about half had access to health insurance. Police called the massacre a case of “workplace violence.” California Terra Garden, which took over from previous operator Mountain Mushroom Farm last year, grows shiitake and oyster mushrooms in greenhouses tucked amid cypress and eucalyptus trees on a 150-acre property that it leases a couple of miles from the coast.

Because Yu knew that her father liked reading the newspaper and that he sometimes had trouble walking, she would buy him a paper and drop it off so he wouldn’t have to leave home. “She will never be able to witness what she dreamed of for all these years.” “Dance was her life,” he said, adding that she attended classes every night of the week. “She was always checking in on our progress, whether it be high school, basketball games,” he said. “Having a place where people from all over the world can come together and communicate through dance is how I can help.”

He described Bing as a man of few words but someone who always cared for others and could “eat bitter” — a Chinese term meaning endure hardships. He was quiet and kind, she said. After several years of working with mushrooms in New Jersey, Bing temporarily relocated to Half Moon Bay in December 2021. He was a volunteer at RotaCare, his brother said. His brother was now in heaven along with their parents, he said. The pair met through Bing’s wife, who first came to the United States in 2016. At the nearby Taqueria Tres Amigos, an employee who declined to give her name said Jimenez Martinez was closely connected to the local Oaxacan community. “He took on the father role for all of us.” As of Tuesday, he was in stable condition, authorities said. He was hospitalized and underwent surgery.

I've written many times about how the shooting industry is intent on manipulating the narrative surrounding the illegal killing of birds of prey.

You’ll note that all three ‘partners’ from the shooting industry are intent on watering down North Yorkshire Police’s statement, moving the focus away from the police’s assertion that the stamping and killing of the hen harrier chicks in their nest was “deliberate“, and instead suggesting that it was “apparently deliberate“. It’s quite obvious that publicity about these crimes is bad news for the shooting industry – it damages their reputation and will, sooner rather than later, lead to statutory reform of game shooting as is now happening in Scotland, in large part because the public has been made aware of what’s going on and has demanded the Government takes action. To recap the details of that horrific story, which for some strange reason only emerged six months later in December 2022, please see [here](https://raptorpersecutionuk.org/2022/12/14/hen-harrier-chicks-stamped-to-death-in-nest-on-grouse-moor-in-yorkshire-dales-national-park/). Here is the Partnership’s final statement, which was published on the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s website on 15th December 2022. Here is his draft press release (please pay close attention to the words I’ve underlined in red): Prior to this appeal for information being published, the previous week North Yorkshire Police had sent a final draft to the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) so they wouldn’t be unsighted by the news when it was published. I want you to pay attention to the unequivocal words used by the police to describe this incident (underlined in red, below): that they suspected the nest of hen harrier chicks had been “deliberately destroyed by human activity“: And this leads me to the latest example of how the narrative is being manipulated. This sly under-handedness only comes to light after freedom of information requests by those of us who are unwilling to believe a word the shooting industry says when it comes to illegal raptor persecution. Whether that be by publishing blatant propaganda about the extent of these crimes, so distorted the truth is barely recognisable (e.g.
