Speaking at the Irish Grain Growers Group AGM event on Monday in Co Kildare, SETUโ€™s Sinead Morris explained that SETUโ€™s role in the project is in developing lab-scale alcohol yield and grain quality tests, optimised for the Irish whiskey industry. A four-year research project is looking at the potential for substituting imported maize with Irish wheat for the drinks industry. The project, DABBING CAP, is hoping the results of its project will provide an additional market for growers.

Meanwhile, the farmers fear for their future as they anticipate a decline in prices of maize when the government will import GMO maize to the country as a measure to address food insecurity, caused by less harvest due to prolonged drought in most parts of the country. Farmers had urged the government to reduce the price to enable them to afford more fertilizers to boost their farm yields and produce more to address the problem of maize scarcity in the country. The Board is also urging farmers to register for the government subsidised fertiliser programme under the Ministry of Agriculture to enable them to acquire fertilizers at a cheaper price to increase production.

South Africa's 2023 maize planting area seen down 3% (ZAWYA)

South African farmers are expected to plant maize over an area 3% smaller than last year, the government's Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said on Thursday.

Overall farmers were expected to plant 2.544 million hectares of maize, down from 2.623 million hectares the previous year. The CEC forecast a 6.3% drop in the area planted for white maize, and a 1.9% increase in the area planted for yellow maize. South African farmers are expected to plant maize over an area 3% smaller than last year, the government's Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) said on Thursday.
