Before that, the country's deadliest crash was in March 2018, when a flight from neighboring Bangladesh crashed on landing in Kathmandu, killing 51 of the 71 people on board. [More video](https://twitter.com/Sanjay_dec30/status/1614541673350172672/video/3) recorded moments later shows a smoking crater at the crash site. The Himalayan country has a spotty aviation safety record, and plane crashes – especially of twin-engine propeller planes like this one – are sadly not uncommon. [This footage](https://twitter.com/aerowanderer/status/1614511252017131522) — of the moment an airliner with 72 people aboard crashed Sunday in central Nepal – appears to have been recorded by a bystander watering plants on their balcony. Then it disappears behind buildings.

Cause of Nepal air crash remains a mystery, but history could yield ... (The Irish Times)

Analysis: Country has seen 42 fatal crashes since 1946, worst being a Kathmandu crash landing in 1992.

It later emerged a mechanic had fitted the aircraft with the wrong type of fuel gauge leading the flight crew to believe its tanks were full on take-off. The age of the 15-year-old aircraft might also have been a factor. Yesterday’s crash is the second in the past year to have involved the company which operates Yeti airlines. Reports also stated the aircraft had a faulty transponder, a device which, among other things, identifies it to air traffic controllers. The aircraft may also have been subjected to adverse winds while approaching the runway. This type of movement is symptomatic of a stall.
