How to Watch Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans (menshealth.com)

Anyone who's got even a smidge of interest in movies knows the name Steven Spielberg. Now 76, the legendary filmmaker has been directing feature films for ...

Evan is the culture editor for Men’s Health, with bylines in The New York Times, MTV News, Brooklyn Magazine, and VICE. The movie follows Sam Fabelman (mostly played as a teen by Gabriel LaBelle, wonderful in the role) as he discovers his own passion for film and grows up in both Arizona and California. But it's not that; the movie is an honest coming-of-age tale that feels real, well, because it is. When COVID hit, Spielberg, like many others, started questioning the future of the film industry. Anyone who's got even a smidge of interest in movies knows the name Steven Spielberg. The movie features Paul Dano and Michelle Williams as Burt and Mitzi Fabelman—based on Spielberg's parents—along with Seth Rogen as his "Uncle" Benny, his dad's best friend, and Judd Hirsch as the scene-stealing Uncle Boris; the ensemble cast in this movie, to put it frankly, crush.

'The Fabelmans' Star Paul Dano On Playing Steven Spielberg's Father (Deadline)

'The Fabelmans' star Paul Dano details the emotional journey he took to portray a fictional version Of Steven Spielberg's father.

And it’s incredible that so many people do it, and I certainly feel fortunate that I’m getting to do it now in a way that I want to and that I feel really good about. And then you made me believe again in a very different context.’ And speaking of Sammy and what The Fabelmans is about, it was seeing actors who could take you somewhere that felt like a character, a world, and a life. So, the example of going from The Batman to The Fabelmans is just that I feel so lucky that I would get to do something so different. I also love when I can believe in the final product because I don’t just do this for me; I need to believe in what we’re all making as well. I remember going to audition after audition and what it felt like to get or not get a part. It’s really fun in a way to have all of that run through you [as an actor] as well, meaning I was letting Arnold into my life but letting Burt lead the way. I always saw this wonderful parallel there, which said so much about Arnold with the way his brain worked through engineering and electronics, much in the way that I think Steven works through movies. And I think it’s some combination of not being able to see or acknowledge or face the truth while also knowing and trying to contain it for the sake of his family. In terms of what I saw in his eyes, his father had passed about eight months before we first spoke, and it was hard for me to process that in real-time. And it certainly wasn’t, but I think he was doing that for the sake of his family, and I think he did that because he still loved Mitzi. But once he told me about the idea, I felt very strongly about the project in terms of how I might meet the material, what I might have to offer, and how it resonates with me. Here, Dano reveals his deep research and close work with the director to capture the true essence of a life well-lived.

How Judd Hirsch Became the Oracle of 'The Fabelmans' (W Magazine)

In one short scene in Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical drama, the 87-year-old actor delivers the film's most galvanizing message.

So I asked, “Who would I play?” Steven said, “A great-uncle of mine.” I said, “What does he do in the movie?” He said, “He made me become a director.” And then this guy in Steven’s movie actually started out in the circus. The message from this oracle that I played will be sent through as a sort of nugget in everybody’s heart. I got a Zoom call from Steven Spielberg, and it started out with “SS wants to talk to JH.” I said, “Who is SS? As Boris, a version of Spielberg’s eccentric great-uncle, Hirsch delivers a compelling speech to the film’s young protagonist, Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel LaBelle), that convinces him to follow his passion for filmmaking. At 87 years old, Hirsch is best known for his Emmy-winning role in Taxi and Oscar-nominated turn in 1980’s Ordinary People, but The Fabelmans proves he still has more than a few tricks left up his sleeve.

After recently completing filming on “Queen of Bones,” in which she stars opposite fellow acting prodigy Jacob Tremblay (“Room”), Butters says she’s been doing a lot of writing, and would love to direct or write a project in the future. Describe her “Fabelmans” work in the context of the challenges she’s faced thus far, Butters once again invokes the ambitions of her earlier character, Trudi. Calling “The Fabelmans” “one of the most emotional movies I’ve made,” Butters says she was thrilled just to receive sides from Spielberg’s longtime production shingle, Amblin. But when she landed the role of Reggie, she was emboldened by his response to her audition. And part of me is there to make friends, and super excited to just be there.”

Review: The Fabelmans is an irresistible saga of family life (The Australian Financial Review)

There have been some impressive films made in 2022, but it's hard to think of one that's so completely satisfying as “The Fabelmans”.

[Obstinacy of the Irish and heartwarming Tom Hanks – two films to catch](https://www.afr.com/life-and-luxury/arts-and-culture/obstinacy-of-the-irish-and-heartwarming-tom-hanks-two-films-to-catch-20221214-p5c6bq)The Banshees of Inisherin is an allegory that skewers the Irish. [Two films worth a trip to the cinema on Boxing Day](https://www.afr.com/life-and-luxury/arts-and-culture/two-films-worth-a-trip-to-the-cinema-on-boxing-day-20221213-p5c61v)The Lost King tells the tale of an ordinary person driven to do extraordinary things. There have been some impressive films made in 2022, but it’s hard to think of one so completely satisfying as The Fabelmans. For Sam, the move means he finds himself the only Jew in a class of tall, waspy jocks and bullies. He will achieve that goal with a train set and a home film camera, laying the foundation for a lifelong career. There has always been debate whether Spielberg is truly a great director – in the sense of being a great artist – or a great showman with well-developed commercial instincts. One of the pleasures of The Fabelmans is the realisation that Spielberg has spent his career revealing tiny snippets of his personal history. The understated Paul Dano is perfectly chosen for the role of Burt, a good-natured workaholic who worships his wife but can’t connect with the way she thinks. When the so-called critics decide that Chantal Akerman’s 3 ½-hour arthouse film, Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975), is the greatest film of all time, relegating Vertigo and Citizen Kane to second and third, and banishing Lawrence of Arabia from the top 100, one can only conclude that criticism is in trouble. At 75 and after having dominated the box office like no director of his (or any?) generation, Spielberg has earned the right to be his own subject. It’s a classic Bildungsroman, a family saga of unusual grace and distinction, that seems destined to win big at the next Academy Awards, especially after it won best drama film at the Golden Globes this week.
