Nottingham Forest vs Wolves, Carabao Cup live: score and latest ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Forest played a second-string side in the FA Cup defeat at Blackpool on Saturday, with Steve Cooper recalling all of the mainstays of his Premier League team.

Wolves did respond but the main problem is their lack of goals and it was evident again here. They did equalise in the 64th minute, after a well-worked move. The improvement in Wolves under Lopetegui since his arrival has been tangible, but this was a tough night. “Dean was fantastic in the 90 minutes keeping the ball out of the net and he carried that over to the shootout. We fought a lot and we had more chances, but we didn't score,” the Wolves manager said. We are unlucky and it will balance out over the rest of the season.

Nottingham Forest's 4-1 defeat to Championship strugglers Blackpool in the FA Cup was branded 'unacceptable' by Steve Cooper.

Toti Gomes thought he had put Wolves 3-2 up late in the FA Cup third-round tie, only to be flagged offside. A Ruben Neves penalty in the 56th minute was the difference at Molineux. For Wolves, Julen Lopetegui has been a breath of fresh air. Can Raul Jimenez be the man to send Wolves to the next round? In the last-16, they put four past in-form Championship side Blackburn in a 4-1 rout to progress to the quarter-finals. The 22-year-old admitted to falling out of love with football amid a lack of minutes at Molineux and is relishing the chance to reach a cup semi-final with Forest.

Henderson the cup hero for Nottingham Forest in shootout win over ... (The Guardian)

After a 1-1 draw, Dean Henderson saved two penalties as Nottingham Forest reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 4-3 shootout win against Wolves.

Wolves complained to Howard Webb, the head of the Professional Game Match Officials Board, and also contacted the Football Association, but the reality is they face a third-round replay against Liverpool on Tuesday. Gustavo Scarpa, who in December became Forest’s 23rd signing of the season, was the only player to keep his place. A couple of minutes later Henderson repelled Hwang Hee-chan’s crisp volley from Jiménez’s cross after the South Korea forward peeled off the returning Forest captain, Joe Worrall, who was among those to score in the shootout. Before kick-off the Trent End unravelled a display of their own; the words “New Team Same Dreams” were draped across the stand beside images of their triumphs of yesteryear under Clough, when they won the League Cup four times in 12 years, a magical era during which they lifted the First Division title and were also twice crowned champions of Europe. [fresh from a match-winning penalty shootout save](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jan/11/nottingham-forest-wolves-carabao-cup-quarter-final-match-report), hurtled towards the Brian Clough Stand and slid on his backside, arms outstretched before the home supporters, wrapped up in savouring Nottingham Forest’s progress to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup. Henderson would soon emulate Gibbs-White in taunting the away fans and it is fair to say the celebrations went down badly with Wolves.

Nottingham Forest player ratings vs Wolves - Henderson shines as ... (Nottinghamshire Live)

Nottingham Forest progressed to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers on penalties after it had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

Morgan Gibbs-White: Was at the heart of plenty of Forest’s attacking play against his former club, including putting in the ball for the opener. Brennan Johnson: Had a positive impact early on as the Reds were quick out of the traps. Has become such a key player for the Reds. Ryan Yates: Didn’t give the visitors a moment’s rest, covering pretty much every blade of grass and constantly trying to break up play. Could have done with the midfield controlling the game more at that point. Got forward well, especially in the first half. Joe Worrall: Marked his 200th appearance for the club by having a hand in the opener and netting in the shootout. Two excellent stops in the shootout, too, with suitably stylish celebrations afterwards. Dean Henderson: Superb saves to deny Raul Jiminez and Hee-Chan Hwang in the first half. Gibbs-White and Aurier both tried their luck early in the second half. Joe Worrall kept the move alive and Boly was on hand to poke the ball home against his former club. The hosts were putting together some nice passing moves, though, and they finally made the breakthrough with 18 minutes gone.

Report | Nottm Forest 1-1 Wolves (4-3 pens) (wolves.co.uk)

Wolves' longest run in the Carabao Cup for 27 years came to an end in the quarter-finals after Julen Lopetegui's side fell to Nottingham Forest on penalties.

Sa, Semedo, Jonny, Kilman, Toti, Ait-Nouri (Podence 60), Nunes, Moutinho (Cunha 60), Guedes (Neves 46), Jimenez (A. Traore 75), Hwang (Hodge 81). Wolves grew into the half, and Forest were indebted to their goalkeeper in keeping their lead. But as Wolves pushed for a winner, the game became stretched, although neither side were able to trouble their opposite keepers. A scrappy opening to the game saw Forest have most of the early opportunities, and it was Wolves Academy graduate Morgan Gibbs-White who was behind most of them from the hosts. Wolves were undone by one of their former players after Willy Boly put Forest ahead inside 20 minutes when he directed the ball into the net from a matter of yards.

Steve Cooper's side then travel to Bournemouth at the same time on January 21. "I don't need to hear anything about this [from the referee]. He said: "The reaction is negative because we want to continue in this competition. "But I don't want to forget one key action against us, which was a very clear penalty for Matheus Nunes. "We started by conceding one goal after a corner and after, we had two very big, clear chances in the first half that we didn't score. "He's so invested in the group, how we work, what we're trying to accelerate in terms of what we want to become. But it was not to be, when Henderson, who was impressive throughout the night, saved to send Forest through. In the second half, we scored one goal and had more chances. Wolves last progressed from the quarters when they won it in 1979/80 and it was the same for Forest, who reached the final in 1992. Serge Aurier flicked an in-swinging delivery on at the near post, Jonny inadvertently helped it onto the bar and Boly was on hand to apply the finishing touch. But that meant Forest were liable to execute fast, incisive counter-attacks - and when one produced a corner, they deservedly took the lead. Meanwhile, following their impressive 2-2 draw with Liverpool in the FA Cup, Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui made six alterations.
