Thank you for believing in a show about a group of teachers in Philadelphia," said Quinta Brunson in her best actress acceptance speech.

Glover was smooth and clearly relaxed in a YSL white satin robe and pajama-pant tux. The boots. The Golden Globes were splashy and fun reminder of what life was like before the pandemic. Bassett is the first actress from a Marvel Cinematic Universe film to win a Globe. The layers. The asymmetry. It doesn’t matter that Carmichael is gay — the joke was terrible. (C’mon, really?) A joke about Whitney Houston dying at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, was in extremely poor taste. And an attempt to draw laughs by saying Will Smith won the Rock Hudson masculinity award offstage, a dig at gay men’s perceived lack of masculinity, was a particularly epic fail. But as long as Carmichael got paid — he said he was paid a half a million for the performance — all was good. The annual awards show, hosted by the Hollywood Press Association, wasn’t televised in 2022 after a Los Angles Times investigation revealed the organization was guilty of racial discrimination. “Thank you for believing in a show about a group of teachers in Philadelphia,” Brunson said in her best actress acceptance speech.

The public school sitcom "Abbott Elementary" came in the lead TV nominee and took home three awards, including best comedy series.

The favorite in the category has arguably been Brendan Fraser for "The Whale." The Malaysian-born Yeoh was just the second female actor of Asian descent to win in the category, after her "Crazy Rich Asian" costar Awkwafina, who won for "The Farewell" in 2020. "Even if this is the end, you sort of changed my life in a million different ways," Coolidge told White. Fresh off her dramatic finale, Jennifer Coolidge gave one of the night's lengthiest and warmest speeches while accepting the best supporting actress in a limited series award. And they gave me the opportunity to try again." McDonagh's "The Banshees of Inisherin" left with three awards, including best screenplay for McDonagh and best actor in a comedy for Colin Farrrell. Spielberg's autobiographical coming-of-age film "The Fabelmans" won best drama film and the dark friendship tale "The Banshees of Inisherin," captured best film, comedy or musical. Fourteen years earlier, Farrell won a Globe for McDonagh's "In Bruges," which likewise paired him with Brendan Gleeson. Carmichael opened by asking the crowd to "be a little quiet here." "I won't say they were a racist organization," he continued before sitting on the stage. The Philadelphia public school ABC sitcom "Abbott Elementary" came in the lead TV nominee and took home three awards, including best comedy series. Nominated 14 times by the Globes for best director, Spielberg also won the honor for the third time.

A short-lived experiment of the second decade of the 21st century, we were all more than grateful to return to the playpen. Spiked with their innocence, and their teachers’ dedication, the central conflict here is the indifference of systems. Set in a public school (the kind that doesn't have the resources that privately funded schools do), Abbott Elementary might bring to mind the best of American movies built around urban schools, from Dangerous Minds to Dead Poets Society and Coach Carter. Abbott Elementary takes this popular format into a prototype of the inner-city school to realise the motivations of its cast of characters more fully, with hilarious results. With This is Spinal Tap, Rob Reiner invented it for modern pop culture in the UK; Canadian sitcom Trailer Park Boys introduced it to mainstream consciousness further West; and the American version of The Office perfected it. It has resonated with the world in a way that I couldn’t even imagine it would have—but let’s be real, I did imagine; that’s why I sold it to you (i.e., Disney).”

'Abbott Elementary' Renewed for Season 3 at ABC (Variety)

'Abbott Elementary,' the ABC sitcom about Philadelphia public school teachers created by Quinta Brunson, has been renewed for its third season.

Along best TV comedy, the Golden Globes awarded to “Abbott Elementary” on Tuesday were best TV comedy actress (Brunson) and best TV supporting actor (Williams). In Season 2, which is what we’re watching, each of the characters are getting more dynamic and the situations are getting funnier. [Quinta Brunson](https://variety.com/t/quinta-brunson/), “Abbott Elementary” takes place in a Philadelphia public school and focuses on a group of educators — with different levels of experience and optimism, but all with the determination to help their students. “This renewal is a richly deserved feather in the cap of Quinta Brunson, Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker and Randall Einhorn, as well as the rest of the cast and crew of ‘Abbott Elementary,'” said Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. ‘Abbott Elementary’ is the gift that keeps on giving, and I look forward to many more magnificent episodes of this brilliant, authentic and just plain funny series.” [Abbott Elementary](https://variety.com/t/abbott-elementary/)” is on a roll.

ABC-Hulu's Craig Erwich on "Abbott Elementary's" big night at the Globes, "The Bear" Season 2 and "Only Murders in the Building" taking broadway.

“Only Murders in the Building” is incredibly popular because the characters are relatable and it’s funny and it’s emotional and it surprises you — in terms of the stories they talk about, the people and the tone. So whether it’s a win for “Abbott,” or John Landgraf [CEO of FX Networks] and his team and “The Bear,” or the 20th team for “The Dropout,” it’s an incredible offering to our subscribers. We’re always on the lookout for a great program for audiences, but other than that I can’t speculate. In Season 2, which is what we’re watching, each of the characters are getting more dynamic and the situations are getting funnier. I think the show continues to grow in its appeal to the audience.
