Made of sandstone and shale, the soaked hillsides then dump out large boulders and debris, sometimes as far down as the coast. Despite the eerie timing and similarities to 2018, the community is better prepared today, officials said. Similarly, the current rains arrived after the 2017 Thomas fire, which burned more than 280,000 acres and left the hillsides barren of brush, at risk of creating huge mudslides. “I don’t know how we could do anything but ask the community to leave,” said Chief Kevin Taylor of the Montecito Fire Protection District. But on Monday, they once again were forced to flee as torrential rains pummeled the region, giving rise to the threat of more mudslides. In all, the 2018 mudslide killed 23 people and destroyed more than 100 homes.

This coming Monday, January 9, marks the five-year anniversary of the Debris Flow in Montecito of 2018. We lost 23 community members in that disaster.

Here are three previously untold stories from our readers that reflect the camaraderie we experienced, the challenges we felt, and the recovery we’ve faced as we continue to build a more sustainable and resilient Montecito. The meeting is on Zoom for convenience and ease of access. You will be able to hear the bells and see the light across Montecito. It’s also a time to continue to heal, and to be grateful for partners with whom we forged new relationships to create a stronger community here. If you’re new to Montecito, you may have seen some of the after-effects of the Thomas Fire and Debris Flow disasters, like rebuilding and road repairs. Neighbors pulled each other out of the mud, and one of our Montecito Fire team used her clothes to cover a woman who’d been burned out of her home and thrust into the deluge.

Why Montecito faces such high risk from mudslides (BBC News)

The elite enclave's geography and climate play into the small town's risk for natural disasters.

Climate is another factor when it comes to the potential to trigger mudslides in particular. Then intense rain followed and loosened the burned-scarred and stripped land from the mountains. And that precipitation runs down into the town. "There could be two inches of rainfall in community, but in the mountains it could total 6 inches and drain into the town," Mr Gurrola said. What makes the region dangerous is the steep topography of the mountains to the east and two types of rock that make up the mountain, he said. The US National Weather Service (NWS) reported that up to 14in (35.5cm) of rain was dumped in the last 24 hours in Santa Barbara, the region where Montecito is situated.
